Yes, there are more people that want to hunt the larger game animals than there are larger game animals. That is why it is controlled. Hunters, as a group, support these limits. Hunters want healthy game animal populations.

You obviously think hunting with a rifle is easy. It takes skill to shoot a rifle accurately...even with a scope. Do you thinks the game animals just walk up to the hunter?

Most of you guys here are clueless as to what it takes to have a successful hunt.

Scott

It sure was easy when I was a kid. And that was 35 years ago with an old 30.06 and a cheap scope. Don't they shoot deer out of tree stands these days? I saw a bunch of them 20' off the highway driving through the south a few weeks ago.

I would like to chime in, and let you all know that I am about to eat some amazing venison kebabs. My Indian wife doesn't eat meat, but she doesn't mind cooking it. She takes venison burger, then add spices, and minces if further. It then gets made into patties and fried. YUM.

Thats why I shoot animals.

I don't find Darts or Bowling very tough either BTW, but lots of folks enjoy doing it. Your criteria of criticizing it because "its just to easy" makes no sense.....Its far more easy to stop at the grocery store on the way home or grab a burger or order a salad.

Think about what you are thinking man!
I lol at what you just wrote.

Go back and read..... I only said that what they are doing is not real hunting in my book. Neither is Darts or bowling BTW....

I wish I could get some (more) venison sausage....the link type. I had some Lentil soup couple years ago made with it and it was incredible.

Here in Florida it's against the law to buy and sell venison. You have to be fortunate enough to know someone who is willing to give you some. Add to that - many hunters have butchers who just convert the meat into the ground version. Hence...no links. :(

Again - I don't have the heart to kill an animal - but - I don't feel like a hypocrite in eating meat because meat production is not something I oppose in general. I realize there's a lot of cruelty involved in raising animals for butchering. But as long as I don't witness it personally it doesn't eat away at my conscience. I know that's a terrible comment to own up to but I'm just being honest.

And as I stated before - hunting for me is OK if the prey is eaten and used for as much as possible and all hunting regulation is adhered to. Hunting by bow is more challenging than by gun so I agree with Richard on that point as well.

VINMAN 04-21-2013 03:42 PM

Add me to the list of former hunters. Was a long-time hunter, but after one unclean kill shot with a bow, I gave it up. Was too tough to watch. That sealed the deal for me. But I still dont condemn those that hunt for meat.
Throphy hunters on the other hand. I have no use for.

The MMA comment is moronic.

Go back and read..... I only said that what they are doing is not real hunting in my book. Neither is Darts or bowling BTW....

I read it, before I posted thanks....

What folks do for recreation often does not hinge on the difficulty of the task. I like to play hockey....its physically draining but not difficult to do.

I guess if you want to hunt in a loin cloth and a rock tipped spear go ahead just don't post any pics! :D

BTW.....Go back and read....I never said Bowling or Darts was hunting????? LOL!!!:D

Nothing personal, we don't see eye to eye on this one!

Rodsrsr 04-21-2013 03:54 PM

Un subscribing..... Your just too tough for me, Im getting intimidated by your raw talent, courage, high powered rifle, scope, tree stand, night vision, ect ect ect...

Maybe if I train for years and years I could learn to do this too.

My favorite part is when he's up in the tree stand on his smart phone when he see a deer walk by below and fires a single shot. Man what a hunter!

Fedex me some - esp. if she uses a southern Indian recipe.

one thing about bow hunting - wildlife biologists have documented more wounded animals than from modern rifles

-----------------------

I am still curious where you get the idea that hunting is required to prevent prey from overeating their food supply, winders.

One more before I check out...At least in a loin cloth and a rock tipped spear you could actually say I was hunting......I'm sure that your a fine bowler and dart player but if you used a laser sighting for your game I'd call you out on that as well. Nothing personal. ;)

In the absence of predators, what do you think would control the population? Starvation? Birth control?

Just copied from Washington State's Dept of Fish & Game, results from the biggest hunting area in the state:

"Deer
Deer hunters in south-central Washington harvested 797 deer, all of them bucks, during the general season of 2011. Despite a harvest success rate of only 7 percent, modern firearms hunters accounted for 576 (72 percent) of the deer taken in District 8. The district’s 323 multiple-weapons hunters had a 13.3 percent success rate, best of all weapons types.

Of the district’s 14 game management unites, GMU 335 (Teanaway) was the most productive for deer hunters, giving up 209 bucks, more than 26 percent of the district total. Modern firearms hunters in the Teanaway Unit enjoyed an 11.1 percent success rate, just behind the 11.4 percent rate for rifle hunters in GMU 342 (Umtanum)."

7% success rate?

13.3% success rate?

11.1% success rate?

11.4 success rate?

The overall success rate shows that 93% of hunters came home with no meat.
The best success rate shows that 86.7% of hunters came back home with no meat.

.....Maybe it's not just driving to the woods and going "BLAM!"

Its much harder to get a quick clean kill shot with a bow. Like I said, my last one wasnt. That one single event, changed my whole past opinion on it.
