Weedeat or Mow first?

For years I have run the weedeater around the curbs,s driveway, plants boxes and what not FIRST, then run the mower and finally popped a beer.

I finally did the first cut of the season this past weekend, and I realize that I'm scalping the lawn with my weedeating technique. (The old one broke and I got a newer, heavier, better? one). Thus, I think I'm overdoing it. Anyhow, my other issue was that if I mowed first, the wheels would mat down the very grass I wanted to weedeat.

Last fall the Scotts guys sold me on a fertilizer package and told me I was cutting it too short with the mower as well. So I raised the deck and it really did make a difference.

Your thoughts? Standard suburban 1/3 acre lot. Push mowed.

I usually weed eat and edge first, then mow. The mower picks up a lot of the debris from the edging process. Less cleanup for me.

Mower as high as it will go then fire up the trimmer. Seems faster to me, I only need to trim what I cant get or miss with the mower.

Ditto, I bag so it sucks up the trimmed weeds quite nicely.

Around here the gardeners work mostly in teams so one guy is using the trimmer while the other mows. Helter Skelter. They they blow the whole mess everywhere.

I use the trimmer first, then mow, then run the mower down the walks to clean. No blower. Most debris gets picked up.

I found that with a good bagging mower I hardly need my blower. Dropping $700 on a Honda was the best money that I've ever spent on the yard.

I weedeat with roundup. It lasts much longer. After moving from town to a semi rural setting, I quickly learned that to maintain a large area as if it were a small city lot is an exercise in frustration.

Back when I was doing the yard, I always mowed first, then weedeat, then edge, then blow

I will ask my wife and get back with you.

I(we) weed eat after mowing, no science or reason behind it. I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.

That's another reason I like to go first with the weedeater. I don't like having the long stems of what grows near the fence laying on a freshly cut lawn. I don't always bag, I have a mulching mower, I'm OK with some of the trimmings staying on the grass.

I do need to lay down some roundup, since there's renters behind me and I can't get the weedeater under the fence in that spot.

I only ever weedeater the lawn. I try to keep it level so it doesn't bite into the lawn. I can't be bothered doing both so I just weedeater.

I do my lawn trimming 3 times a year with roundup around the trees, fences, and creek. I honestly haven't started a pushmower or weedeater for several years, and do all my mowing on a 27 HP John Deere 855 utility tractor with a 72" mower. I'm mowing around the pastures, house and barns on 5 acres, but haven't started yet this year.

...pop beer first!

tevake 04-23-2013 01:35 PM

My Honda mower is almost like a vacuum cleaner. Whether bagging or mulching it disappears the cuttings. So I mow after doing the trimming. That leaves things looking tidy. The grass we have around the pool grows like crazy, and is coming into the max growing season. Requiring mowing each week through the end of summer, to keep it nice.

Mow, then weed wack, then edge. I've been doing it for 25 years and use it as a form of exercise. I've even had ankle weights on while I mow...what the heck was I thinking!

mattdavis11 04-23-2013 02:25 PM

beer, weed eat (edge), beer, mow, beer, blow, beer. Probably left out a beer or 4.

I have the kids put in sealed bids. Lowest gets the job.

Thinking about going to live auction this year, maybe best fathers day present gets the job.
