What are you looking for? Around here, any open to the public auctions are either specialty cars (exotic or vintage), cheap high mileage pieces of garbage, or overpriced.
If you're looking for a "regular" car, you need to be really careful buying from an auction. Dealers spend years learning how to buy at auction, and come armed not only with that knowledge but also usually with a paint gauge, to see if the car has ever been repainted. When I used to buy, I had an acronym to remember the basic things to check - POTT - paint, odour, tires, transmission. I would also have read a detailed condition report, and even then would always send the car through a post sale inspection. |

AKA used car lot.
When the subject is Honda, Toyota, etc it's just a marketing gimmick. When the subject is exotic/specialty my opinion is you'll be seeing cars that have been passed over by knowledgeable buyers.

Many years ago when I was young and foolish(now I am older and a bit less foolish)I bought a 60's Volvo 1800 - the sporty one. It looked great on first blush but turned out to be full of bondo. Well I could not for the life of me sell it privately because I could not look into the eye of the prospective buyer. So I sold it at auction. Would I buy a car at auction again - no. If I cannot take it for a test drive and get a PPI done why bother?

In Va the public auctions are just legal dumping lots for the dealers. As in missing smog equipment, tampered odometers, removed check engine light bulbs, etc.
No way in H3ll I'd ever buy or recommend someone buying from there. You can't test drive them, sold "as is" no recourse. The guy next to you who knows little about cars will bid the price near retail. All pointless. Better off going to the strip club. If you're going to through money away, at least get some entertainment out of it.

Email Kaisen. He buys at the dealer sales and gets the car to you for a small fee. Almost always cheaper than buying it off the lot.
His PM's are disabled, but the email link still works. |

In CA they can sell just about anything - and do. The only disclosure requirements used to be salvage title or use as a cop car/taxi.

Someone mentioned recourse, and that's the deal breaker. At dealer-only auctions, there's full recourse for undisclosed accidents, and arbitratable recourse for smaller things. Buying a car with neither recourse nor inspection is like plunking big dollars down on a single spin at the roulette table.
