 As far as I know, no opposed cylinder engine has ever been put into production. The connecting rods on the outside cylinders seem to add a lot of mass to move.

Fairbanks-Morse made an opposed piston 2 stroke diesel engine from the1940's until just a few years ago. Mostly used for locomotives and marine applications. It was a little different though - it used two crankshafts interconnected by bevel gears and a vertical shaft. The lower crank was the main output and the upper crank ran all the ancillaries; supercharger, injection pump, etc...

Diesel I can see, but where does the spark plug go on a gas version? Even if you get it in the cylinder somewhere, it will be on the perimeter of the chamber.

I love the wave of the future comments....everything that can and has been done in piston engine development happened before 1940. Everything since has just been material and electronic improvements

Commer made a more complicated opposed piston, two stroke Diesel 60 years ago. One crank, three cylinders, six pistons, six rocker arms, and twelve rods. Had a blower to feed it, like a DEEtroit.
A Commer TS3 rolling away.

A Engineer friend of mine said the 2 stroke will be the wave of the future . With a little doing and some plastic parts, a rack and pinion crank shaft it will be all kinds of efficient .
