Mary Thom, 68, Founder of Ms. Mag...Dead. M/C Hwy Accident

Thom had picked up her 1996 Honda Magna 750 from winter storage when she veered into traffic upon entering a highway in Yonkers, north of New York City.

Thom was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who never owned a car and had been riding for four decades, her nephew Thom Loubet told the Journal News newspaper in Westchester, New York.

She struck a vehicle and was struck by another, according to her nephew Thom Loubet.

Ms. Thom, who was 68 and lived in Manhattan, was riding her 1996 Honda Magna 750 motorcycle on the Saw Mill River Parkway shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday when she hit a car, throwing her onto the road, the Westchester County police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

After winter storage you need to be extra careful, until your riding skills return.

Who will be the first to say, "...at least she died doing what she loved."?

Don Ro, What is your point? Was she to old to be riding?

Motorcycle riding is like any other activity, you only make a fatal mistake once.

No one knows the dangers more than one who rides, its a choice. I think about it every time I get on my bike. I will not live in a safe prison and avoid something that I love. You know what I worry about? Getting to old to push my heavy bike out of the shop, guess I will down size, I would rather die on some road than in a nursing home not knowing who I am, or who my family is.

Well, I guarantee the person didn't "love" their last few moments of life.
When I hear someone say that, I always think, "How about we see how much you love those same last few moments."

"She died doing something that she loved."
She loved crashing on the Hwy?...and being run over by a vehicle?
That was my point.

BTW, I, too, dread the day that my age tells me to stop riding.

Your point, then, is that no one can ever die "doing what they love" IF you define the "doing" as the fatal accident rather than the activity during which the accident occurred. More of a semantic game than anything else.

That would really suck. (rim shot goes here).
But it would make a great platitude. "At least she died doing who she loved."

I have noticed my being a little "off" after not riding for just a month or so. I have never taken a riding break over winter months. Who knows what precipitated the event? As someone recently said, "Not many "minor" accidents on motorcycles."

That stretch of the Sawmill River Parkway was laid out a long time ago, like before WWII, and has narrow lanes and is busy. Tricky sometimes. Just sayin

Or, if the bike had been in storage for several months, a dry rotted tire could have let go or any number of things. RIP.

Strange to see a comment like this, on a thread like this, from a retired military pilot.
