Wow, good cop story today.
So I took the p-car out for some exercise today. Beautiful spring day and was enjoying the back-road drive with some moderate speeds. I got behind a dude in a pickup talking on a cell phone and after a few double yellow line turns, traffic opened and I pulled out to pass. I left it in 4th as there was no oncoming traffic for about a half mile. As soon as I passed the truck an unmarked SUV pulled in behind and lit me up.
The ticket process was uneventful, I was polite and he was professional. He wrote a ticket for an illegal pass over a double yellow. I drove to my turnaround spot by the river and headed back on the same road. I passed the cop and we did an acknowledging wave. I went to the turn that I executed my "illegal" pass and what do you know the broken yellow began at the apex of the turn, about where I had pulled out to pass. I turned around and drove to where the cop was waiting on the side of the road. I told him what I had seen and he instructed me to wait while he went to investigate my claim of the broken yellow line. He returned, parked and walked up to my car. He said it was close enough to tear up the ticket. He did and we shook hands and told each other to stay safe. What a country. ![]()

Dude, you should probably buy a lottery ticket and drive slower for awhile cause you just used your "get out of jail free" card.
Great story. I would say that the officer should be recognized by his dept. for being honest enough to tear up the ticket but somehow it may be better to just let it go.

Had I not been stuck behind that cell phone talker, the cop probably would have gotten me for speeding. It was truly a special confluence of events that saved my bacon today. Maybe a lottery ticket is in order. Never bought one before but I am on a roll. Even before the cop tore up the ticket the pool store called to say that a new pump motor was not needed and a much cheaper fix for my noisy pump would take care of the problem.
Damn good day, going to celebrate with tacos and beer, starting now.

Astonishing story. I think in most places, if you pulled up on that cop after having been ticketed, he'd have stepped out, gun in hand.
And good on that cop. Buy him a donut.

Yes. Both the officer and the OP handled themselves well.

If you would go to the trouble to go back and talk to him about it, you would certainly contest the ticket and likely would have won. Getting a traffice ticket tossed is not good for the flatfoot. He could tear it up in front of you, or a judge could essentially do the same in front of both of you, while giving Officer Friendly the stink eye.

Yes, I may have beaten the ticket in traffic court, if there is such thing as traffic court rather than traffic collections. He had no business writing me the ticket as he was about a 1/4 of a mile from where I made the "illegal" pass and was facing in the same direction I was traveling. This would have required him to monitor traffic by looking in his side mirror. It was obvious that this was a bad ticket. I was just blown away that he tore it up.

Lucky man indeed!
I don't mean to hijack your thread bivenator but it reminds me of what happened to my wife some 14 years ago. She was driving (and speeding!) with our then 3 year old son strapped in his car seat in the back seat. She got pulled over and as soon as the cop began his inquiry, my son begins just bawling his heart out!....he then yells out "please, please don't put my mommy in jail!!!" ![]() The officer is quite taken by all this and then causiously responds..."OK son but please tell your mom to just slow down a bit."....he then turns and walks back to his vehicle and drives off!....no ticket! ![]() She got lucky that time!

WHOA!!! Congratulations Bi and thanks for sharing that AMAZING story. I cannot believe it!
I think we've all been screwed by cops who didn't see what happened but wrote us up anyway. I know I have. Didn't realize there was anything you could do about it except just bend over and take it! You are to be congratulated for beating the odds big time!

Women are much more likely to get out of a ticket than men, fact of life.
My wife got out of several speeding tickets, helps to be a nurse on your way to work apparently.

I think I posted about it this before - I got pulled over for expired registration when I was trying to reset the CEL on my 993 so I could get it smogged. After I explained the whole Smog, CEL, no more referee debacle, he said, "With tags so long expired I am supposed to impound the car. That's why I had you pull off on the onramp. But I understand what you are trying to do so I will let you go with a fix it ticket. Have a nice day."
It's amazing what being calm, polite, reasonable, and without animus towards a peace officer can do. I have similarly talked a +20 speeding violation in podunk-ville Nebraska into a warning. YMMV

From memory:
One night the 911T suddenly died a few blocks away from the apartment(distributor ground fell off from vibration). Damn I was tired. Quiet area. Small town. I was pushing it up a long slope when the PD pulled up. Officer ran a check, got out, and helped me push it to the peak. Thanks again bud. Another, after a full day of school/work and 6 hours of loading trailers, friend and I drove from SF to Vegas. About 4am it was definitely time to stop for the night. 3/4 there was close enough. Went through a small town but couldn't find a motel. Return to the highway was 15-20mph faster. Friend was trying to be argumentative, and I had bloodshot glassy eyes. Didn't look too good. Got a warning instead of arrested. |

Well that's a first.
The ones I know are arseholes who are only focused on getting as many convictions as they can to up their stats. Another grrr. When I got fired from working with police I wanted to have my lawyer present for the meeting but the cop said "Not necessary, I just want to have a friendly chat." and I had two angry cops grilling me for an hour and a quarter. Maybe I should just turn up one day and say "Hi it's me, I'm back - and by the way bi tch I'll sue your arse off for illegal dismissal." |
