It depends on how used it was, and how much of a discount. Like said above, a 2 month old, $3000 bed that was in a guest room and used twice, yeah, I'd buy that for $400.

I have a Sleep Number. IMO, that's a different ballgame. You're buying 98% air! And you can change the air out on it with brand new air for free.

My biggest worry on a Sleep Number would be if there's something broken on it, like a broken pump, or a leak somewhere.

I did that for both my kids when they graduated to a queen size mattress. High quality mattresses that were used by PO in a guest room. Like new condition no smells or other undesirable attributes. Absolutely would do it again - savings were substantial.

I have done it. Someone's guest bed / trundle to use as same. Saw the owner and their home, clean family, two mattresses, the one pulling out on the bottom bed still in the wrapper. Someone slept on the top one a few times. $100 complete. (At least $800 new).

I read the title outloud to my wife and we both said, "Ewww!" at the same time.

That said, if you buy a SN bed, unzip the cover and remove the the gray foam that covers the air bags. Procure a memory foam mattress topper from your favorite store in the correct size and use it to replae the foam poiece you just removed. You will be amazed at how nice the mattress feels.

There's a reason people are selling them. We threw away 3 of them (ours and 2 kids) when I realized my back was getting worse, went on vacation and the backpains went away with the hotel bed.

Didn't think to sell it.... :(

We love our select comfort.

After about 15 years I topped it with the Costco memory foam pad and its better than ever.

No pump noise to worry about. Mine hasn't leaked a single psi - ever. Never have heard the pump run. Set and forget.

Zeke 05-03-2013 06:01 PM

Right. If you buy into SN's toppers you could pay 2000 bucks for what Costco can sell you for a small fraction of that. I have a wool topper I would transfer over.

jyl 05-03-2013 06:26 PM

Here is the only issue I've noticed w/ SN beds. If one side is 80 and the other is 20, the 20 side will be lower by about 1/2". You could put a piece of 1/2" foam there, under the topper, if it bugged you.

livi 05-03-2013 10:27 PM

Depends on the mileage. And if the seller is from the Blue Oyster Club I would be reluctant..

dmcummins 05-04-2013 04:38 AM

We just got rid of our SN bed. The wife had to have one and then didn't like it. I don't think buying a used one would be that bad. I would have the cover cleaned though. And you could always add new layers of coverings between the mattress and you.

I don't like to think about hotel room beds.

I gave mine to my son.

Someone's buying used mattresses - Salvation Army came and took a queen and a full off my hands last week and left me a receipt for a tax writeoff.

yetibone 05-04-2013 05:52 AM

My wife, and I sleep on a king mattress that my uncle bought 25 years ago, and didn't like. I've had it for at least 20 years, and wouldn't even trade it for zero gravity because it's that comfortable.

I flip it when the time changes twice a year.

genrex 05-04-2013 06:13 AM

Herr Oberst -- thanks for the reminder about the Salvation Army truck.

I forgot that they come around to pick up donations. Makes it super easy. :)

When I sold my townhouse in Pacific Beach (San Diego), I made a deal to give them my master bedroom set. We got down to brass tacks with the real estate agent, about the mattress.

I said: "They don't want the mattress, do they?"

Him: "Yep, everything!"

Gross. It was 15 years old, 3 wives, countless girlfriends. There was more DNA in that thing than a crime lab!

I guess the discussion is for buying used anything that is soft upholstered. Sofas? If you lived in a motel for a month, would that mattress become yours?
When I was about 19, I slept over at my girlfriend's house. Parents were home so I slept on the sofa. Her mother just bought it second hand that day and I didn't think anything about it. Woke up maybe an hour after I fell asleep covered in roaches. We through the sofa out the front door and it was like something from creepshow. I will never, ever, ever buy a used sofa or even let a sofa from an unknown source in my house.

I got a shiver reading that, gross! A friend of mine moved into a rental that was infested with roaches, unbeknownst to them. They ended up throwing away EVERYTHING when they moved out a few weeks later.

Dust Mites, Bed Bugs, Things that eat off body oils and shedded dead skin cell flake......I'll take a new bed thankyou. I honestly don't care if someone peed in it once, or has a lump on her side as she'd only do it while a bottom, flip that side down and be done with it...........its all the other creepy things that lilfe there, not just Large Marg before she moved out.

Dust Mites & Dust Mite Allergy

Washing sheets and pillow cases rids us of bacteria and other buildup we drag into bed with us.

Or so we think.

One report, presented at the Healthcare Associated Infections 2011 meeting in London, found an array of microorganisms and debris inside pillows. In fact, within 2 years of use, one-third of a pillow’s weight comprises dead skin cells, bugs, dead dust mites and their droppings, according to the research

So what? The pillow you slept on last night is full of the same stuff. Tonight you'll plop your face into it again. Are "your" dust mites different than theirs?
