Would you buy a used mattress?

OK, copycat threads have become popular, but I ask in earnest. I am considering a Sleep Number mattress but are they way over priced due to the way they are marketed.

SN's are basically a vinyl bag and you can buy new covers for them. Not cheap, but much cheaper that the whole enchilada. Or they can be professionally cleaned. The vinyl part should be a no brainer wiping it down.

So while I would not buy a used conventional mattress, I have slept on numerous hotel mattresses and a couple of other's mattresses in other people's homes.

I guess the discussion is for buying used anything that is soft upholstered. Sofas? If you lived in a motel for a month, would that mattress become yours? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

I have in the past but that was when I was young and my budget was smaller.

I guess if you could cover it and it wasn't smelly....

I'd probably clean the plastic bits with sanitizer and dry clean or even replace any removable covers.

I'd buy a used leather couch but probably not a cloth sofa. Then again, I can be pickier than I used to be in my younger, less financially capable days...

Some things I don't buy used. Mattress is one thing I don't buy used. Our present mattress is about 15 yo and still feels like new. I buy quality and it lasts a long time.
:)

In a hotel you don't buy a used mattress but you do rent them.

Zeke 05-03-2013 12:05 PM

Hey, you can rent who's on them too.

Exactly. What's the difference between staying at a hotel and buying a used mattress?

(I would never buy a used mattress)

No problem buying a used Sleep Number. I have one, about 6 years old, looks and works like new. As you say, they are an air mattress with a washable and replaceable cover.

A conventional mattress I might not buy used, because they do wear out. But, after having this Sleep Number, I'm never buying a conventional mattress again anyway.

I just bought a used 5th wheel camper. It had, what the owner called a brand new mattress . He said that they only slept on it twice, but they never took the plastic off.
I just took the plastic off, and called it new. Otherwise, no..

Talk about judging a book by its cover....

Would you buy used underwear??

I rest my case. :D

Aragorn 05-03-2013 01:16 PM

With a regular mattress I would be concerned about bed bugs and such. This system sounds like it is easily to clean and sanitize as well as replacing cushions. The only problem I have heard with the sleep number beds is motor noise. Sounds more like you are buying the system and replacing the soft surfaces to save some coin.

Hotel mattresses generally scare me. Take a black light and check for stains the next time you stay in one. Do they even clean the comforters? I don't even want to think what is on the TV remote because they never clean those things. Family hotels seem to be cleaner than the high end digs. It seems to be the high end hotels that see the most action that have the most stains.

I got a used queen sized mattress and box spring it was setup for the guest room,
and it was never used ,
more of a display , and thus it was in the way when the lady wanted to make this unused guest room a sewing room,
so off it went to CL ,
otherwise if it had been a used slept in bed I wouldnt have gotten it
