I didn't see where you could actually run these on the car, are they just wall hangers or something to put on at a show?

Dunno, as I am in Florida and I have a new-in-envelope '65 plate for if I ever get the 356 restored....

I don't think the wonks at DMV really understand the attraction of YOM Plates.
These "legacy plates" are not really 'black plates' (or yellow plates) as in the traditional, vintage sense; they'll be basically be normal serialized plates but in different colors. And they're available for any year vehicle, so you could have "1956" style plates on your 2015 Prius. Personally, I'm skeptical of the idea. They will probably be made with modern materials (ie thin aluminum and enviro-friendly paint) and lI just don't think they'll have the same visual impact as real YOM plates. I'm sure law enforcement wants some sort of reflectorizing, so my educated guess it there will be a compromise and it will look like freeze-dried ass. My '63 T34 has the original black plates. ![]()

Q13: Are the Legacy Plates going to look exactly like the license plates issued in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's?
A: No. Current law requires license plates to be reflectorized and modern manufacturing processes may not allow for an exact replication of the original plates. The images shown on the website and REG 17L are for illustrative purposes only. The final design of the plate will differ; however, as many characteristics of the original plates as possible will be applied. |

Plates are designed (reflectorized) so CHP can better use laser. I'd fully expect non-reflectorized plates to be made illegal soon.

Wouldn't reflectorized plates hide the Photo-blocker spray better?

Friend of mine just stripped the paint off his normal CA plates and repainted them black.

that is technically illegal and I would expect them to spot it quick unless it had only 6 characters

I've seen this done quite a few times, actually. I've even seen a 'late' personalized plate on a 356 re-painted to look like a '56 plate

The yellow, black, and blue plates that CA is offering is contingent on enough orders being placed. No idea if they've hit their bogey yet.
