Big Snake.........

Look what they found!

Pat Long was sitting in a ground blind with his son hunting hogs near Midway, GA. This rattler stuck its head into the blind. The son shot it in the head with a .22 pistol. 9.5' long Head is 5.5" wide Fangs are 2.5" long I think he said it had 22 rattles. It had the bones of 3 little pigs in its stomach. How many times have you walked through the woods in the dark? See attached photo

It is a big snake but they did the typical put it in a pole and hold it 6 feet closer to the camera than the man angle. I would love to see a tape measure next to the snake.

The snake in the picture is an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Crotalus adamanteus. This is apparent because of the black and gold diamond-patterning and, of course, the rattle. This species does not reach eight and a half feet long.

I still wouldn't mess with it. That's a mean looking snake but in Aus we have BIG brown snakes. A long time ago I saw one and its body was about as thick as my forearm... Maybe 8 feet long, big head and a mean disposition. People say if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone. Sorry but that hasn't been my experience with our Browns. They are aggressive and will peruse you if they feel threatened.

Your Ratlers have always been fascinating to me. Why the rattle? What evolutionary advantage does having a rattle give them? (If any)
I grew up watching American movies about the desert and the Rattler was often a special guest. (Duel)

What's that movie were right at the beginning the main character gets bitten by a Rattler and treats himself on the spot? He then puts the rattler in a cloth bag. From memory he says "why did you bite me" or "why did you do that?" as he puts him in the bag.

Even a new born baby rattler can hurt or kill a human. I don't mess with them at all. The rattle is usually used to warn a non-food animal that there is a snake there. They don't like getting stepped on.

Any rattle snake is bad pookie. With a quick Google search you can find stories of people claiming 15 foot rattle snakes. It is 100% BS.

Jeez that's a big rattler, I killed a Red here in California once that was 6' and it scared the crap out of me still while I was skinning it. We have had BBQ rattler and of course, it tasted like chicken.
That one could be seat covers for a well set up 924

I've eaten a sidewinder and a mojave green rattler. Mean cusses them greens.
Doan remember zackly what they tasted like, we were drinkin.

the sidewinder was about 2-1/2' long, the green was a good 4' at least.

BTW, we had gutted, skinned, battered and fried the sidewinder and were in the process of eating him, and I looked in the sink. His heart weas still beating.
He's been dead for 15 or 20 minutes and it was still going thump thump thump. Gross.

The rattle is to warn animals to stay clear. They don't rattle on the hunt, only when they don't want to get stepped on by a horse or a deer or something. Big Eastern D Back like that would kill you dead with a bite.

They are very tasty.
