I need another TV Series! Got One?

I'm acting like a millennial, binging through them:

1. the Americans (loved)
2. House of Cards (loved)
3. Grimm (loving)
4. Fringe (still loving)
5. Lost (loved, blah, loved)
6. Top Gear (of course)

Got any suggestions? I'm fully amazon, hulu, netflix- compliant!

If you are turning back the clock and havent seen it check out The Wire. Damn good.

Hydrocket 05-13-2013 07:34 PM

HBO had one a few years back called "OZ". Was a hardcore prison drama. VERY good...

I'm assuming you've seen the Sopranos?

Sparticus was quite good too.

The Walking Dead many people LOVE this one.

Showtime had "Sleeper Cell" about a terrorist sleeper cell....was good.

I'm currently going through the old Miami Vice series....:)

holtjv 05-13-2013 07:50 PM

Good stuff so far, thanks.

A few of my favorites series available on DVD are:
- Eureka
- Warehouse 13

- Castle
- Coupling (BBC version)
- Dr Who (Matt Smith/David Tennant)
- X-Files/Millenium

- Earth 2
- Seaquest DSV

Homeland
Madmen
Game of Thrones

herr_oberst 05-14-2013 08:44 AM

Yeah, definitely Trailer Park Boys. Totally addictive, only a half hour long. You find yourself doing the "just one more" all evening long!

Ronbo 05-14-2013 08:59 AM

Older sci-fi with a great story:

Babylon 5

JPG 05-14-2013 09:29 AM

+1 Killing
+1 Gallactica
+1 Dexter
+1 Homeland
+1 Sherlock

Also
Game of Thrones
Veronica Mars (really)
Justified
Golden Boy
Elementary
Scandal

Oldies but goodies if you missed them 1st time
Firefly
West Wing
NYPD Blue (only seasons 1-5 available, wtf?)
Northern Exposure for laughs

motion 05-14-2013 09:46 AM

Californication
Mad Men
Dexter
Homeland
Southland
Shameless
Breaking Bad
Boardwalk Empire (lead actor still bugs me and I feel is not cast correctly)
Nip/Tuck
Arrested Development (pure genius)

Tried to watch, but couldn't get past the first few episodes:

Weeds
6' Under
Walking Dead
The Americans

Eric Hahl 05-14-2013 09:51 AM

Sherlock on PBS Masterpiece Mysteries or something like that. Great modern day take on Holmes.

BlueSkyJaunte 05-14-2013 09:53 AM

Sherlock was great. They need to do more, but the lead actors' new-found international stardom will probably prevent that from ever happening.

Firefly (13 TV episodes) + Serenity (feature film) was pure awesome.

Psych! is pretty funny. They get some interesting guest stars (Molly Ringwald, Jeri Ryan, Sherilyn Fenn!) and lots of obscure references. It's one of the few shows I can watch with my kids and not feel like I'm losing IQ points.

I enjoy Tom Selleck's Jesse Stone series. I think there are 7 or 8 of them so far.

+1

Forgot to mention my other current favorite: Homeland. The first few episodes are disturbing but it's amazingly well done.

There's the original movie and then the TV series. I have the DVD set for the series. It used to be televised on cable years ago - not sure if available anymore but a great series if you're looking for something different...

Aragorn 05-14-2013 01:35 PM

Speaking of Masterpiece shows, Zen was pretty good. About an Italian detective solving mysteries. Had a hip 60's feel to it.

gtc 05-14-2013 01:59 PM

I recently found MacGuyver on netflix streaming.

LeeH 05-14-2013 06:07 PM

If you're just looking for laughs (and appreciate British humour), check out The Catherine Tate Show on Netflix.

Catherine Tate played Donna Noble in Dr. Who, and Nellie Bertram in The Office. Her BBC show is sketch comedy, along the lines of The Carole Burnett show. There are a variety of characters she plays, the funniest being a grandmother with a potty mouth. Generally the show is not safe for kids or work. Some sketches are fine, then she'll drop a few F-bombs in others.

Anybody else seen this?

legion 05-14-2013 06:17 PM

The Mentalist. Probably the most intriguing show on TV.

Yes, I really like Catherine Tate. Another pelican introduced me to her. Agree on the language, not suitable for young ears.

One that the wife and I really enjoyed is Gavin & Stacey. Right now, Netflix only has the first season available.

Quote:

Gavin & Stacey is a British comedy television series sitcom that follows the long-distance relationship of Gavin (Mathew Horne) from Billericay in Essex, England, and Stacey (Joanna Page) from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. The writers of the show, actors James Corden and Ruth Jones, also co-star as Gavin and Stacey's friends Smithy and Nessa. Other prominent cast members include Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Melanie Walters.

The show was produced by Baby Cow Productions for BBC Wales. It ran for a total of 20 episodes, broadcasting between 13 May 2007 to 1 January 2010, comprising three series and a Christmas special. Initially, the series was shown on digital-only channel BBC Three, but a growing following meant that it was subsequently moved to BBC Two, and finally BBC One. The last episodes of the final series formed a significant part of the prime time BBC seasonal programming, and were broadcast on Christmas Day 2009 and New Year's Day 2010.

Gavin & Stacey was acclaimed as a hit breakthrough show for BBC Three, becoming the most nominated show in the 2007 British Comedy Awards. To date it has won several awards, including the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTAs) Audience Award, and the British Comedy Awards Best TV Comedy Award, both in 2008. The programme has also been well received in several other countries in which it has aired. A US remake titled Us & Them is scheduled to air on Fox in the 2013-14 US TV season.

On Britcoms...

I'm not sure if Harry and Paul are available, but there are many YouTube videos available.
