is there a doctor in the house.
working under the car today and a metal sliver cascaded down from the heavens and went in my eye. it kinda sat there until i rubbed it, then it dug in and hurt like hell. i tried flushing it, finally to the mirror to take a look. i was able to pull the sliver out and this happened... creeping around the whole eye white as the days gone on. does not hurt, flushing it ofter with water. little waterie, but not as much pain as an eye injury before where they actually had to grind down the surface of my eye to get the bits out. that did not cause the blood intrusion i am seeing today.
![]() is there damage being caused right now w/o medical care? is there something i can put in my eye? neosporin or the like to help fight infection? or should judt start eye patch shopping? t

Nothing worse than getting something in your eye. Hang in there, and go get that looked at. I have had a few pieces drilled out of my eye also. It is like a horror movie watching that bit come at you. Good Luck!!

Get your self to the ER.....I found out the hard way that some ERs where I live have Eye specialists ... or on call...
You have waited to long for immediate care obviously...but still get that checked...

Get a pro to get that out now. Rust is a concern.

If your doc is part of a multi-specialty group try calling the call center and seeing if they have an EyeMD on call. May cost you an office visit charge rather than ER visit charge - less.
Were you wearing safety glasses? Even then stuff can fall in your hair or eyebrows and make it into your eye after you remove the safety glasses. You clearly broke a blood vessel in the conjunctiva which is a thin loose covering over the sclera, the white part. Since the conj is loose blood will leak into it for longer and then as your eyelids move across the eye the pressure of the lids will spread the blood. If you take aspirin or ibuprofen regularly or are on a blood thinner more blood will accumulate than if not. The concern is whether there is any retained foreign material left in the eye. The EyeMD will have magnification using a slit lamp allowing them to see if there is any retained material, although at this point it could be hidden by all the blood. Given that you said you could see the foreign body and the bleeding did not start until after your removal effort it was likely not a penetrating injury where the metal was moving fast enough to pentrate to the interior of the eye. That can happen when striking metal on metal which is why safety glasses are important. At this point it is essentially a bruise on the outside of the eye and will take 10-14 days to clear given the amount of blood I see. Cold will help the puffiness today and tomorrow. Then warm may help it clear faster. Sometimes the blood will spread through the tissue enough that your eyelid will appear bruised. Best to have it checked and in the future if flushing alone does not help seek aid from those with the proper equipment.

My doc in the box has specialized eye emergency equipment. I can go there anytime between 8 and 8. But I agree that it needs immediate attention.

Doc in a box - Can be good, can be not so good. Skill level varies widely for eye issues in that setting. I have dealt with some who were very good and have taught them additional techniques to enhance their care, while another group has been told, " just call me"

They used to use liquid cocaine before drilling out sliver. I had to have this done years ago.

You really need to see (no pun intended) an ophthalmologist. There may be retained slivers of metal. The metal may then rust. The ophtho has specialized equipment (and knows how to use it) to take care of the situation. You don't want to mess with your vision. Worst/best case scenario, the ophtho finds nothing in there and you get a bill for that. (Or does some simple 5-second flush--that you feel like you could have done at home yourself--and takes care of it.)

nah, stuck it out. in reading ddbach's post & looking into webmd i opted out of the doc visit sat night. i decided to see what the deal was sunday morning. by then the entire white of my eye had bled over, it was a bit swollen, but still no vision issues, or pain. forgot it was even there at one point and was wondering why people at orchard supply were looking at me strangely...
![]() no signs of infection, or vision loss after what id read seemed ok to let it ride. back in my carpenter days i had an object hit me in the eye and really bug me the whole rest of the day. I thought i had just scratched the eyeball cause i could detect nothing in the eye. let it too ride & the next morning i could not open my eye because of the weep of infection welded my eyelids and lashes together... that doc visit required a grinding down of the eye to remove the FO. this has been more dramatic, but less painful, or bothersome.... thanks for checkin in trek. see you next month at sears race weekend. t

You are the classic case of asking the forum what to do and most of everybody says go see the eye doc and then you don't. If it was me I would have gone to get it looked at just to relieve the apprehension. However that is your choice and hope your eye gets better.
