DMV ruling - Front license plate NJ
Hi, Just curious if I won't get in trouble by replicating my license plates same size in a magnetized rubber and place in on the hood of the Pcar. I will be mounting a RUF type front valance without any provision for the license plate mounting, please refer to below photo. Unless I drill holes on it, I won't have a way to mount my front plates. I also think mounting the front plates at the dashboard is illegal in NJ.
Your thoughts. ![]()

Do you have any other modifications to your car like a turbo spoiler or modified exhaust?
The more 'look at me' you are, the greater the likelyhood of having issues with the local authorities. I do not believe you are able to substitute your state issued plate with a replicated version. Does your car have a screw-type front tow hook recepticle? If so, there are brackets available that allow you to mount the license plate to that spot on your car. I have one for my 944. -Z

I was pulled over twice in VA for no front plate and once for suspected DUI. When he couldn't get me on DUI, he nailed me for no front plate. Failure to produce an insurance ID in AZ is a $1000 fine. No front plate in VA was $80 and we don't need them in AZ. You can probably keep a plate in your door pocket and tell the cop you're waiting on the mounting hardware.....for the rest of your life.

Most cops in NJ will give you a ticket for no front plate.

This. And as Z said, don't draw attention.
You can certainly mount it over the front opening with 'L' brackets from behind, no need to drill holes in fiberglass. Even if there is a cooler, you'll have enough cooling for the street, and if you track the car make it easy to remove. On my '71 I used to use dzus fasteners for the plate. |

If the rubber strip on your bumper protrudes as much as the one in the photo, there might be a way to mount the plate to the bottom of the strip... maybe by bending the top 3/4" of the plate into an "L" shape and running screws upward through the plate (or plate mounting holes) into the strip.
That might be considered as defacing the plate, however, so you might want to check with the DMV or a highway patrolman on that. Someone might make a bracket that does the same thing. Or you could make it yourself, similar to what dad911 mentioned.
