Best AR-15 magazines?

I don't even have an AR-15, but I was thinking of picking up some magazines. Eventually I would like to get a Sig 556 when prices settle back down. I have a feeling they will get the magazine limitations through.

Can I assume Colt magazines are high quality?

Any advice appreciated.

There are plenty of them on gunbroker.com. But yeah, typically $50 each.

I was curious about the Colt mags with the green tops. I read that the army has changed over to a new design.

I use Pmags @ work and they have never failed me. Colt USGI mags that came with my Colt M4A1 are pretty good too.

Yup. Don't bother trying to buy them right now. $15 magazines are selling for $50, there's no stock in stores.

Magpul is shipping...I was watching when my friendly LGS opened up a box with a grand total of three 7.26x51 PMags in it. Two were already spoken for!

After Pmags you can try Thermolds. I have a few and they're fine.

Magpul has some specific mags for Euro rifles.. not sure if a Sig AR is regular spec Pmags or could use the Emags instead..
Either way, Magpul is quality , they fit without a ratle, they fall free, the bolt stop works, good springs and they are very durable.

A SIG AR (516) will take Pmags, but I don't know if the 551 and 556 will.

not exactly sure what the difference is, i think they probably work either way, it's just that emags supposedly have some specific changes so they work better in euro guns.

from their website

"The EMAG (Export MAGazine) is a lightweight 30-round 5.56x45 NATO polymer magazine that features a number of aesthetic and functional changes from the PMAGŪ. While EMAG remains 100% compatible with the AR15/M16 platform, its unique geometry is optimized for foreign-made weapons such as the British SA-80 (L85A1/A2, L86A1/A2, L22A1, L98A1/A2), HK 416, M27 IAR, and others."

Not the 551. Along with P-Mags I have a few Tapco & metal GI surplus that have worked too.

There was a guy on Gunbroker.com selling 10 lots of PMAGs for $124.99, shipped, in late December. He had 6000 of them. They sold out in under 24 hours. I bought 1 ten lot. I wish I bought ten.

My last trip to Afghanistan, I had two PMAGs fail. One was a broken feedramp and the other was warped somehow, keeping the follower from moving past halfway easily. This time (and all the ones prior), I have aluminum mags with anti-tilt followers, and my PMAGs are sitting back home.

IMHO, other than the viewing window, there is no advantage to PMAGs over standard mags with good followers.

I bought a couple Gen2 Pmags last night. $55 each! I'm going to pick up a couple Colt mags as well. Expensive, but certainly not the most foolish thing I have ever spent $ on

I have a friend who spent time in the sand box and swears by the Pmags. That was gen 1 without the windows.
