My wife and I waited almost 1 1/2 yrs for our refunds last year. !!! We are Canadians and sold a winter home near Tampa. The IRS required us to file returns to prove we didn,t owe any capital gains. We used Liberty tax for everything. They prepared 2 returns along withan app for taxpayer id numbers because we were,t citizens. All docs were sent together.
90 days later the first letter arrives asking for more info The return had been seperated from the id # app. Id # arrived seperatly a week or so later.
We reapplied with all docs again and our new id numbers . 3 or 4 months later a request for more info again . sent everything again. about a month later my wife,s refund was issued but no sign of my identical refund.
I sent more AGAIN. Then actually talked to a real live person who told me there was no record of my return in any IRS office in the country.
I sent another copy to the real person .
Then another request for a missing part. (there were only 3 parts ID# ,return and some certificate issued by the IRS itself. They had lost the part they produced in the first place.
I convinced them to use the identical copy of the certificate in my wifes completed return. Finally got my refund a year and 5 months after starting.
10% of the sale price of the house was withheld for 18 months

I can't remember the last time I got a return.

I wish it was only a few hundred... more like several thousand. And my withholdings are set at zero, so paying as if I have no dependants, wife is doing the same. Taxes suck.

Getting a return doesn't mean you didn't pay as much as another person, just the opposite. It probably means that your deductions are not something you can always plan...like repairs to a rental property a or a vacancy.; maybe an employee business expense late in the year that you did not plan. I paid over $50K last year and still received a small return. Even more the year before.

I'm still waiting. A very simple return for us done with Turbo tax. They have a knowledges receipt. PITA IRS
