Anyone here do life or health insurance sales?
I keep getting calls to interview for insurance sales jobs. I'm really not interested in this line of work at all, but have heard it can be lucrative. Why are they so aggressive in calling when no other line of work is (to my knowledge)? Does the job suck so bad that they can't find people? Or do they hire huge classes, figuring a small percentage will make it?

Big turnover rate. It can be lucrative, but you need to spend 10 years building a book of business or buying someone's exiting book of business that is retiring out of the game. It depends on the type of insurance you would be selling, I have a friend that has been with Farmers for about 8 years and he is just now making 90-100k a year.

I know two that own a business selling health insurance. One in Scottsdale, the other in NO....Both are struggling. It was bad before Obama Care, and now is much worse......

Yeah, I would think a lot of stuff is up in the air for now and it will take a while for things to shake out. I know a guy who does it on the side and does pretty well. But he's always been a wheeler dealer guy with a lot of irons in a lot of fires. As far as someone starting up with one and really making a go of it in a short period of time, never heard of that. Why do these companies recruit so aggressively? If they really need workers, seems they'd make it more lucrative for beginners.

Pick up your family and friends, get frustrated, you quit and your family and friends are now part of your "mentor's" book.

Like mentioned above, everyone that's new sells into their network of friends and family and after they max that out, they move on. They may have less friends left afterwards too!
I would not sell insurance to individuals. I have a friend who sells liability and building insurance to large businesses. He does well and that's a different ball game. Maybe something to check into. G |

I sell Health and Property / Casualty insurance to businesses. Don't do this. I was just at the County Fair this past weekend and some poor schmos were sitting in a booth that said "Affordable Health Insurance." That is a crap job.
Selling Health insurance to businesses is a fine living. However. With the ACA, a lot of things are up in the air. We are seeing a huge number of competitors simply leaving the market due to the complexity. If you wish to pursue insurance as a career, give me a PM. I will be happy to talk. Pretty high turn over to start but there is a nice annuity piece once things are established. Good luck! Larry PS - stay away from AFLAC. |

I think anyone that has ever posted their résumé online has been bombarded with insurance sales opportunities. I always like the ones that say my education and experience make me a good fit for insurance sales. Engineering degree, MBA in work, and aerospace management experience = insurance sales? Seems that they set the bar pretty low, which is reflected in the usual level of aptitude that I have encountered when dealing with insurance agents.

There is nothing pleasant about buying ins. Nothing good about being a doc and telling people their cancer test came back positive. All you've got is a necessary evil, so you try to focus on comparison. A lot of negative selling.
I do believe there are a lot of salespeople that will sell the full service policy to someone with a 4000 car. I wouldn't carry collision on the Jag if it didn't come with a policy insuring 3 other vehicles and the home. But, I'm sure not too many ins guys would say, "Why not pocket the difference and save it for repairs or replacement." |
