Attention Baz and other Pelican dog owners!

I need some advice please....in short, my 3 year old neutered male Vizsla:

Bodi...love him to death but....he is just KILLING MY LAWN!!!

We've tried reducing the lawn fertilizing and also hosing down where he pees but now he's gotten scared of the hose and is basically peeing all over our backyard...out of reach from the hose.....smart a*s!

His diet consists of fairly high quality protein....chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, veggies..all cooked supplemented with a fairly high quality dry dog food. He drinks a lot of water also.

I've done a bit of research on this and found many internet forums advertising supplements for dogs. Some have mentioned adding apple cider vinegar or tomato juice to the dog's food. Bodi's tummy is fairly sensitive and he is a picky eater so I'm a little apprehensive about just trying these..... so I thought I'd turn this over to the Pelican braintrust. What has been your experience with your pooch and what has worked for you and your dog in this regard?

Cheers!

Alex

Yo Alex,

Are you saying his urine is killing your turf and asking what can be done about it?

Uhm, walk him so he does not do his business in the yard?

Set aside some yard space and build him a run?

Water the yard so as to dilute the urine asap after he pees. Obviously just area where he has freshly watered. I have two dogs, an Irish Wolfhound and a Basenji and this works well. Just have to have the hose ready and be attentive. Good luck.. I understand your pain.

Your dog needs retraining. Dog should be lead to a designated ie. smaller area in a corner for instance so he can pee in that one area alone. My wife trained all our dogs to pee in one small area. After being lead to that one small area the dog becomes conditioned to peeing in that one small area. Eventually the dog goes there by itself.
That is the theory anyhow!

I would increase fertilizing to help the turf recover quicker. Use a balanced ratio with equals parts N and K. A 15-5-15 granular (or similar) would be good. Important to feed the roots (that's what the 3rd letter "P" Potassium does)

The other replies above sound good as well.

HTH!

recycled 60 has a good solution there.

A dog run while unattended will work too and then just take him out on walks / romps at the park instead.

My dogs like to go in a corner, and usually the same one. No lawn there.

Yup.

Nice dog

Puppy school 101. One of the first things to teach a pup (dog) is "Go toilet", and when they have a pee lots of "Good Boy!" etc and some doggy treats. My new pup Buzby who is 10 weeks old is 90% there. There is a patch of lawn that I don't think LOL will ever grow grass again.

I've resigned myself to the fact the fenced in back yard, (that's why it's fenced in), is the hounds yard. No more fertilizer I just cut it and let the weeds fall where they may. The front yard is another story all together!!
Please be careful about fertilizing where your doggie plays.
They are happy hounds!!!...

let the grass grow

if cut too short too often

it is over stressed

my dog saves it for walks mostly
as it is the doggie calling card
used to mark their presences

So, no one here has tried the many amino acid dog supplements that are available?

You really want to drug your dog, so its pee doesn't harm your grass? Come on, it is URINE, it isn't going to change into champagne by taking a pill!
