Alf is right on. Most of this thread is like listening to "tuners" discuss the differences between a '79 VW and '79 Porsche.

Rolex and Porsche have much in common. It is all about the details and what is under the hood. Anyone that appreciates a 911 should gain some knowledge on mechnical watches.



A couple of favorites in no special order.







The best everyday, hard use watch I can think of after 30 years of using one. Although I have most recently been very fond of a no date sub for daily wear.

The simple solution:

An atomic, solar Casio G for an everyday driver and a "complicated" Patek Philippe auto or manual for those "special" times when "time" is less important than art.

What do a few seconds mean when one is wearing black tie garb with one's better half?

Mechanical will always be more sexy and romantic; but a cheap, radio based atomic watch powered by the sun will win time after time if you want to know what time it really is, IMHO.

One day when I may have an IP based WiFi watch that synchs with "network time" anywhere on Earth, I will also want to have an isolated movement that finds time via very small, precision bits made by a human.

One can have both ways.

Very nice collection Sir! Mine is about the same except with GMT Master's (a stainless as well as a stainless and gold), Daytona's (again a stainless and a 18k version) and a antique dress version as well as a semi-modern President thrown in the mix. Your collection reminds me that I do not have good current photos of my watches and need to correct that shortly!

What is the reversable watch in your second photo? Looks nice.

Am partial to the Kimber Custom but the Colt sure is a nice piece to start with. Something about the .45 auto that just makes you feel safer in its presence...

Joe, I believe it's the Jaeger LeCoutre "reverso".... afaik, it's their "signature" watch.

Thanks Joe, my favorite watch is the '78 white sea dweller, 4 down. Lots of history there.

The Reverso is a pink gold, date, which I bought about the same time as my 911. Again a lot of history behind the design. The first, intentionally designed, sports watch BTW

Like many of us who collect watches I trade in and out of them. Mostly out of them while building my car over the last two years.
I had to keep asking myself, "do you want to keep the stainless Daytona or would you like a new engine?" But I started wearing a Rolex because there is nothing tougher to keep accurate time. I am lucky enough to use good watches in ad shots so they are a write off like all the props

Nice pictures! My first Rolex was a stainless and gold GMT master that I got in 1975 or so. Nothing like the prices in the PX! Know what you mean as its a member of the family now and I could not let it go for any amount.

Nice looking HK. I had a model 91 years ago and used a MP-5 while overseas but they would not let me bring it back! I can smell the powder right now...

A man after my own heart. Although next time you want to use a Japanese sword as background let me know, i got a bunch of really nice old stuff you could use. That Paul Chen thing detracts from your 1911.

I buy all sorts of old Swiss mechanicals but find myself going back to Rolex for their simplicity in design and reliability as a time piece. That and i am a cheap bastard and Rolex are the cheapest watches around.

Here is a Red Sub with a morden twin, both Bonded out on a Japanese sword handle from the 1700s.



Just noticed that they are showing the same time, i set the sub to Atomic time about 2 months ago and the GMT about 2 weeks ago. They keep pretty decent time.

I do not do any restoration, leave that up to the professionals. It takes 10 years of apprenticeship to learn to polish a sword.

The Zenith is a heck of a lot less expensive and a good bit easier to read day or night than a Daytona.

Did you know that the El Primero has the movement that is used in the Rolex Daytona? a little modified, though.
Funny that the most sought after Rolex has a Zenith mechanism.
