I just use the clock on my cell phone to tell the time as I always have that with me and I don't like to worry about a watch banging around on stuff or having to remove it to work on the 911.

You guys who find quartz watches so disgusting.....do you secretly keep one around for something accurate to use as a standard for resetting your mechanical heirlooms? The quartz movement you hate is deadly accurate. And when are you ever in a situation where you cannot simply turn your head toward a clock to determine the time? Okay, okay, I understand your love of craftmanship, but golly.......

No secret, got a couple quartz watches that keep better time than the mechanical ones. I think of quartz watches like i think of my Pathfinder and Lexus. More practical than the Porsche as transportation but do not stir my passion.

For me, mechanical watches do more than just tell time and Porsches do more than just moving me from A to B.

Well, I am not a hater of the quartz movement, just like I am not a hater of non-pcars, but to keep my watches set I have my pc sync it's clock from the time server on the internet with the lowest most consistent ping times. Yes, I made a list of national time servers and then pinged them repeatedly to see which were the closest/fastest and the most consisten and then picked the best. I figure my pc is pretty well on time.

Break out your Fathers watch and go around and get estimates on the cost of repairs. I have had my Rolex's overhauled around the world (depending on where the govt said home was) and the price varies a lot.

I use a independent place here in Phoenix now and have one of mine overhauled every year. Price is anywhere from $200 to $325 depending on if the crystal needs replacing or not.

Have never lost money on a Rolex and bought my first GMT master in 1976 at a normal store. Bought several more in the PX and a couple in Saudi at the gold souks. Saudi's feel that gold makes men impotent and I feel that I can help them with this. Got a gold Daytona for a very good price this way, well under the cost of a stainless model.

Wayne, its an investment, not just a watch. When my Father passed his Rolex President came to me and it will be passed along when I head West. They last forever if taken care of and if not taken care of still last forever, just need some maintenance.

Superman, there is a program you can download (email me for a copy) called Dimension-4 that communicates with the national bureau of standards over the internet and sets your computers clock every time you boot up. Nothing more accurate but we use the GPS on the airplane which is accurate to a RCH!

My mom used to tell me, and she still does, do not buy expenses, buy assets, a Rolex is an asset a Timex is an expense. i love this hobby as well. For now I can't afford too many so I'm trying to limit myself to the ones that deal with racing/automotive history. I'm also looking into the old Atlantics as well as some Russian Rakieta timepieces.

Super, I would NEVER consider strapping a quartz watch on my wrist ..... sacrilege, I say ..... almost like driving a water-cooled, all-wheel drive, 4-door Porsche for christ's sake ......


PS: my mechanical watches keep excellent time - never had a problem???

When Heuer re-introduced the Monao, they made quite a fuss about only making 3000 of them, for "connaisseurs"... Promise they broke immediately. The ones that came after (and are still available) are the ones like the ad above. The one on my wrist is #1609. Incidentally, I have both the brown and the black bands.

Beautiful watch George. Its sad to see Tag Heuer flood the marked with the volum reissues of the classic Heuers, now marked Tag Heuer. I really like this Targa Florio as well, and I stumbled upon one in a store here i Norway with only the Heuer markings. This photo has the Tag marking how ever.

Something I didn't know, IWC that did a bunch of Porsche Design watches is owned by VDO since the late 70's. I'm going to have to save up for a while for an IWC, they make some great watches.

Take a look at these pictures from Lange & Söhne Tourbillion, and tell me that this has nothing in common with a classic Porsche. The tourbillion mechanism itself (last picture) has 70 or more parts. Only a handfull of watchmakers (are able to) make watches with a tourbillion mechanism.

"The delicate tourbillon mechanism also serves the purpose of improving rate accuracy by offsetting the disruptive effect of gravity. The rotating cage is suspended by two pivots between two diamond endstones. It turns about its own axis once a minute and can be precisely balanced with tiny counterweights. The fascinating movement of the tourbillon cage can be observed not only through an aperture in the dial but also through the sapphire-crystal caseback. "

Nice thread! I've come to the conclusion that us Porsche lovers definitely have a preference for finely tooled machinery!

My collection started with my dad's Benrus and Omega, now I have a SS Rolex Daytona, SS Omega Broad Arrow, Revue Thommen Airspeed and Cricket and heaven forbid, a battery-powered Breitling Aerospace, and titanium Seiko. I definitely prefer the look of chronograph/chronometers.

Chopard has a nice line of racing watches with its "Mille Miglia" line:
