George a couple of years ago Rolex started building there own, in house, calibers for the Daytona. It has proven to be an excellent and at least the equal of the e/p.

No question the E/P is one of the best if not the best chrono built to date. Date? Funny how Zenith can add a date and Rolex has yet to pull that off or make a Daytona legible.

Knew that the movement on the Daytona was not the same as the one in my other Rolex's but now know why??!!!

Whats the story on the El Premiero watches? Never heard of them.

Zenith builds the El Premiero caliber in house. Ebel, Zenith and in the recent past Rolex (highly modified of course) use it in select chronos.

Still without doubt the best of the "old" style mechanical chrono calibers. The new Daytona has removed many of the moving parts and simplified it hence the layman's term old and new style. Only thing that betters the E/P is the new Daytona's caliber. You won't see that one in another weatch :)

2 Daytonas? I have on SS/white, and I love it more than reason. That El Primero movement is a gem.

George, more like no Daytonas today :) The black face stainless paid for my new engine. IWC? Great watch and one of my favorites! How close are they to you physically.

What do you mean? the IWC is on my wrist, the Daytona and the others are in a safe.

I've been yearning for an IWC Flieger chrono. There's something about that tough look. Plus the military style of the watch makes it a chrono that's easy to read.

Sorry George, poor writing on my part. I meant how close to IWC's factory are you in Switzerland? I always thought it would be fun to tour Rolex and IWC among others and buy watches at each. (wishful thinking on my part) But cheaper than touring Porsche and having something done in the special works department ;)

December WatchTime & car-related watches
 

Just recieved December edition of "WatchTime". Nice article on car-related watches; i.e. watches celebrating Carrera GT (Porsche Design), Ferrari Enzo (Girard-Perregaux) , Mercedes SLR (TAG Heuer), Bentley Continental GT (Breitling) and others.

I'll keep my Rolex.

I hear you, I'm keeping my Rolexes too; just thought it was an article guys who like watches and P-cars would enjoy.

I've had my GMT Master since 1991. It's been in two wars, and more airborne jumps than I'd care to remember.

The fact is, Rolex are classics. Like the cars we drive!

I've had 2 IWC Fliegers in the last several years. I bought them because i like the design and case finish, but sell them because i do not like the movement. It is a base ETA 7750 that IWC reworks. I find that it is too noisy and the tolorances are too great. I tend to be picky with watches though.

You could get many other watches that are better all around for the same money. Rolex, Zenith and Omegas come to mind.

7750 is a decent movement for around 600/700$ imo.

The Sinn Flieger comes to mind at that price.

I'll check out Sinn's offerings. The ones that I have seen are very clean in appearance, almost simplistic. Basically, a Germanic efficiency. They have a few which are increadibly busy-looking too, but for the most part they have clean lines.

I didn't know it's the same movement in the IWCs as well, though. What a difference in price for the same movement!

Anyone know what movements the Panerai watches use? More and more I am drawn to their butch ruggedness.

Man after my heart but I could never live with just one Rolex. How about a Daytona, and a GMT master? Gotta also have something to "reach out and touch" someone when needed and thats either a 30.06 for long distance or 45-70 for short range...

Joe I use to think along similar lines..then I started building my car :) Now I have a Sub and an IWC SBS dive watch.....and I am happy, most days anyway.

A good part of the fun was just aquiring the lovely mechnical watches that are hard to find.
