show your ID when you pay with a credit card at restaurants????
More and more places need to see ID when purchasing with a credit card. I hate that. Drives me nuts. No, I do not have 2 second of my life to waste. Buy gas at the pump, we shove the card in and pump away. If you go inside to buy gas with a cup of coffee, then you must show ID to make sure the card belongs to you. it doesn't make sense. Today, we had a great meal with my family. I was shock that the waiter wanted me to show him my ID just to make sure it was my credit card. The extra trouble of having to reach around to my fat ass to pull my wallet, get the card out just so he can have a look drives me nuts. I had my little one on my lap playing while yapping with my wife and all this had to stop because they wanted to see my ID. WTF, I am suppose to enjoy my meal and the people around me. I was pissed, and told my wife that we hold the tip. He was lucky because he was a good waiter. Is this happening around your neck of the woods?

I'm actually the opposite. I like when I have to enter a zip code at the gas pump. I don't mind showing my ID and them checking that it is signed on the back. I'm all about keeping the honest people honest, and making it harder for the crooks. My .02

I get why they do it but there have been occasions where it drives me crazy. Once I ordered from a restaurant next to my hotel for pick up. I had ordered from them the night before. Well, I walked over with just my hotel key and credit card. They asked for ID and refused to let me pay until I retrieved my ID. Seriously? I just ordered here yesterday and I could understand if my bill was over $50 but it was $19!!!! Let's just say I was a little irritated. I had to walk back to the hotel and back to the restaurant. ANNOYING!
I had this happen when I didn't have cash on me and just came back from a business trip and forgot my ID in my briefcase. They didn't let me purchase books that totaled less than $20! Really? If I stole a credit card, I would be definitely charging something different than $16 in children's books at the local Barnes and Nobles! Good grief! |

I'm ok with showing ID. Yeah, its a bummer, but its not the business owners fault. So many vermin crawling the country looking for a fast buck.....

I never have and I can't see the point as to why you should have to. The restaurant gets paid by the CC company if the card is used with a PIN or it's within their "floor level" which is about $400.

If you remember, years ago you have to show ID when using CC. Recently, you don't have too. This make it's easier for fraud. Look, think about when you lost your cc and it fall into someone else hands.

Showing ID..........
No big deal. If that is the worst thing that happens, you are having a great day! Get over yourself. On the other hand, if I had been the business where Tweezers 74 went to buy food, I would have made an exception. Not enough common sense going around these days!

AE Costco card has your photo on it. The big plus is no Chip = no Pin
if I had been at the business where Tweezers 74 went to buy food, I would have tell them to keep it!!! As for Common sense... ![]()

I always refuse. Asking for additional information is against most merchant agreements with the card companies and the practice is actually illegal in some states.
Visa and MasterCard state in their merchant rules that if the back of the card is signed, a merchant may not make giving personal information a condition of making the sale. If the card is not signed, they may ask for identifying information. American Express requires merchants to check only the signature on the back of the card and does not require any additional identification. |

You used to have to show it all the time. Now, you don't even have to SIGN if its less than $25 in a lot of cases. Another way to get us all dependent on plastic money. I use my debit card as "credit" all the time. Recently, they picked up some fraud charges and halted the card...didn't call me though. I was out to lunch with somene and it didn't work. Kinda embarrassing.
I don't think showing an ID is such a big deal. I used to be a cashier taking checks and you had to see ID and a credit card and write it down on the check. AND check corporates bad check list.

pay now or pay later
I think it's a good thing. It helps prevent others from using a stolen card. In short, pay now with a few seconds extra of your "valuable" time or pay later with possibly thousands of your dollars and hundreds of headaches. A few years ago I even went so far as to sign the back of all my credit cards with, "see photo ID."

Good grief! Aren't there more important things in life to get your blood pressure up about? With the unfortunate exception of voting, it is common to show ID for a lot of things nowadays. This going down the tubes fast country is absolutely full of crooks at every level. Get used to it boys, it ain't going to get any better. By the way, you can avoid the ID check if you pay with cash.

One of the many reasons it is not a "treat" to dine out, as is popular opinion.
If you can't do the time don't do the crime. BTW - why penalize the waiter if he is just doing his job? Don't shoot the messenger. And maybe you should just pay with cash next time!

I'm smiling reading this post because on PARF, most see no issue with an ID when it comes to voting.

The debate on PARF is whether the ID is a device to prevent illegals to vote. This thread is about inconvenience. NICE TRY! ![]()

I agree. It's too trivial to care about.

The only issue I've had is when we moved last year. I changed everything to the new address then when the gas pump asked for ZIP code, I couldn't remember the new one at the moment and ended up just driving off and feeling rather stupid.

Don't worry, chip and pin will be in place by the end of next year. At a demo at work a couple of months ago, they took my credit card and made a duplicate with a little portable scanner in about 30 seconds. From there, anyone could sign it and they would be me. When I lived in London 7 years ago, your card never left your sight. They brought a portable scanner, scanned your card at the table and you entered your pin. We are way behind and identity theft is is a bigger threat every day.
