Poor little girl needing a lung

Is this heartbreaking or what?

Also feel badly for the officials in the middle of this who are being put in a very unfair position. Shame on those who are crucifying the people who have to enforce these rules. What an awful job to have to do.

God bless all parents with sick little ones.

Next time somebody hits you up for a donation to such and such animal shelter or political donations make sure you think long and hard about diseases that children suffer disproportionately and consider funding research towards a cure.

But still consider the amount of your donation that actually goes to anything helpful, vs being spent on administration, overhead, hookers, blow, etc.

Is this the girl with CF? There is nothing harder to watch, than a kid growing up with CF. I know, I see it every day.

i don't approve of most rules and believe that they have been made to make life easier for people that don't want to make the hard decisions.

A judge has thankfully ordered Sebelius to stand down.

I don't feel one iota of pity for the officials. They chose their jobs and are free to quit at any time- they're just hiding behind the regulations we'll soon have thousands more of. The kid doesn't have a choice. Or didn't until a judge ordered Sebelius to do the right thing. That cold hearted b*tch is running Obamacare- does anyone wonder why so many Americans fear and loathe it?

And please note this isn't unusual- my closest neighbor is a children's oncologist. What he can tell you about kids, their maladies and regulations can drive you to fury or tears.

Fact: there are not enough donor lungs to go around.
Some people will get the transplants, others will die. Reality sux sometimes.

There are rules in place to guide those in the terrible position of making the decisions, so that the logical decision is made in an attempt to do the most good.

If this girl gets a lung transplant someone else will not and most likely die. Someone who probably would have a better chance of long term survival.

So, now she's front page news. She's going to get the transplant because of the publicity and MAY live, and someone else will likely die because people don't care about that other person. Someone who also has a family who cares about them, but is ignored by the media and the politicians who don't have anything to gain by exploiting them.

Do we really want to turn it into a popularity contest? Do we want to have people call in and vote to decide who gets the lung or heart and who doesn't just like a reality TV show?
I certainly hope not.

Yes it's a sheety deal and yes it is cold-hearted, but that's what is needed in this case.
If more people checked the fricking donor box on their driver's licence renewal this type of tragedy wouldn't happen as often.

Show of hands, how many people here are registered as donors?

I am a organ donor. I have donated over 6 gallons of blood.

The only reason this is on the news is she a cute little white girl. Like the horrible child abductoins or missing children. Cute little white girls get front page coverage.

Been a donor since I first got my DL.

I agree Sammy. Protocols are put there for a reason. Yeah it sucks big time, but unfortunately there has to be rules.

From what I've seen, the parents sued to allow her to be in the adult transplant pool of organs - NOT to jump up the list.
Currently, you need to be 12 for adult lungs.
Medical advancements now allow for younger. The doctors are saying she has excellent chances with an adult lung.
The bureaucracy hasn't kept up with medical advancements.
She's not being placed in front of anyone because of a judge or media coverage. Just allowed to be in the pool for consideration.
At least, that's what I've seen...

Doctors should be the decision makers here. Not HHS.

Thanks skipdup......that is 100% accurate. She isn't jumping in front of the line - just being added to the pool. The protocol is outdated.

If it was the POTHUS's daughter, would make an exception?

There was a guy on the radio the other day, cant remember his name, but hes the head of some lung donor organization. ( he was also a lung recipient). They were talking about this case, and the douche was so matter of fact and cold about it . His attitude was basically oh well too bad rules are rules. sorry your dying kid.
I wanted to reach through the radio and choke the crap out of him.

Putting her on the adult list bumps everyone on the kids list at the expense of everyone on the adult list.

I'm fine with that but I do agree protocols are there for a reason and shouldn't be subject to popularity votes. If nothing else this event puts these protocols under the spotlight and will encourage more frequent updates as technology changes.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a first-in, first-out situation. There's a matrix.
I don't see how putting her on the adult list, where she legitimately belongs, somehow unfairly bumps anyone.
Let the girl FAIRLY COMPETE for the lungs.

Is it fair to let "Bob" get the lungs over the girl, just because HHS (wrongly) follows an antiquated rule? I say not!

I am one of the most anti-litigious people out there. But let me tell you this, I would sue without a second thought if some bureaucrat was standing in the way of my child's life - based on some OBSOLETE rule.

Opposition to this confuses me greatly.

well if your Bob's wife..
she should sue to keep the little girl on her side of the current protocol..

there was a famous ball player..
a drunk..he killed his liver..
other's didn't..
guess who got the liver..

the Hospitals we brought parts too...
followed ...results versus need..
you can't save them all..
that's hard to accept..
but when your forced to make those calls..
you do..
helping them all will make you feel better..
but the outcome isn't nice..
everybody got a little..
but it's not enough for one..

Mickey Mantle, a great ball player but questionable life decisions.

Well for those who are saying there's not enough to go around so we have to draw the line somewhere - how is that not the same as the federal government over spending it's budget every year?

We make exceptions.

Who makes the rules?

We do.
