What's the longest you've owned a DD?

Just sold my '89 Chevy truck that I bought new. 24 years of fairly trouble free ownership. Went to a lot of race tracks, 1000's of jobs and cross country 4 times. Plus hundreds of short trips 2 hours or less. Original motor and it didn't leak a drop of oil. Never took the valve covers off in 250,000 miles.

That was a good ride. I doubt I'll ever have a vehicle as good as that again, but sometimes it's time to move on.

Here I am in '94:

I'm waiting for nostatic to answer this. :-D

scottmandue 06-25-2013 03:29 PM

I'm waiting for onewhipped :D

fastfredracing 06-25-2013 03:31 PM

I tend to get bored pretty quickly, and am always grabbing up some new project broken on the cheap, and flip out of the old one. That being said, I had my last Grand Cherokee for a little over 3 years. That is probably as long as I have ever gone.

fintstone 06-25-2013 03:42 PM

I usually keep a car 15-20 years. I tend to keep houses too. I have bought eight of the ones I have lived in and still own 7.

He wasn't asking shortest :D

My longest would be about 9 years - 1996 4-runner bought new and sold in 2005. Prior to that, 1967 Bug bought in 1977 and sold in 1985.

My quick flipping is a more recent phenomenon. With my luck I'll actually like the BMW I'm leasing and end up buying it when it comes off lease.

HA! I made a funny...

sc_rufctr 06-25-2013 03:48 PM

My current daily... 11 years and still going strong. (298,000km)

The VR6 engine IS reliable but the stuff they bolt to the outside isn't ;)

Go figure.

Good question, hell maybe 3 years. I've been fortunate to have a company vehicle for 28 years so haven't had to worry about a DD.

porwolf 06-25-2013 03:51 PM

Still my daily driver: 1982 Landcruiser FJ60. And I bought it new. That's 31 years. About 600,000 miles, first engine, first transmission!!

BeyGon 06-25-2013 03:55 PM

I had my 71 Buick Skylark 455 from 2001 to 2007, the other long one was the Ford Pick up I drove to Costa Rica, I drove it there in January 96 and sold it there in 2000. The only two I have had for any real time. But I have had over 50, at least 15 in the last ten years. Runners, not sitting in the yard cars.

cruisin 06-25-2013 03:58 PM

30 years

I bought my '84 Jeep Scrambler new in September of 1983. So this Sept. will make 30 years with the old beast. love it.

Hugh R 06-25-2013 04:06 PM

I owned my DB4 for 35 years, it was a daily driver for about the first 25.

NeedSpace 06-25-2013 04:23 PM

Dad Bought New - 1983 MB 300TD wagon, I acquired in 1990 with 80,000mi, my friend totaled it with 183,000mi in 1996
I Bought New-1998 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 6cyl for 6 years and 140,000mi
I Bought New-2004 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 4cyl and still own, just turned 160,000mi yesterday

That said, if my friend didn't total the MB I would probably still be driving it. I have seen a number of these with over 500,000mi.

onewhippedpuppy 06-25-2013 04:33 PM

2 years with my 240sx, but I was young and naive.....:)

My 911 and S8 are both going on one year, so I'll have to do something about that.

VINMAN 06-25-2013 04:39 PM

My 944 23 yrs.

look 171 06-25-2013 04:42 PM

My 93 landcruiser bought used in 96 and had it until early this year. Trouble free until I got a pin hole n the head gasket at 230,000 miles. Gave it to my workman as I was on my way to get it tune up a woman was on her cell phone nails me at 4o mph head on. Killed my poor truck. Not a scratch on me. Thanks goodness for big vehicles.

72 GM 1 ton truck bought from my neighbor for 500 bucks in 1987. It came with a rebuilt engine. Painted it and used it for the next 12 years

93 Dodge diesel truck bought in 2009. Still have it. it just rolled over 110,000 miles last months.

wdfifteen 06-25-2013 04:45 PM

Longest in years or miles? Does it have to have been in continuous use as a DD?
My '56 Porsche coupe was my DD for about 5 years - '74 to '79 or so. I still have it almost 40 years later. My longest in miles was an 84 Mazda GLC with 196,xxx in 8 years.

Not to get to far OT but I met Marilyn Chambers at the release of Insatiable II in New Haven. She was worn out but still very hot. So your car is still awesome!

70SATMan 06-25-2013 05:43 PM

My 91 Maxima with 275k on her when I sold her in 2010 to one of my colleagues for $900. He's been driving her since. SHould ask him how many miles are on her now.

Evans, Marv 06-25-2013 07:48 PM

the '89 Ford Club Wagon I sold in 2005 with about 270K miles on it. That was my all time favorite DD. Wish I still had it.

My 1995 Subaru Legacy 13 years of trouble-free ownership.

I have owned my 944S2 since 2001 so that's on 12 years now...

Bill Douglas 06-25-2013 10:23 PM

Well done Milt.

I usually buy a 7 year old Corolla and keep it for ten years. By the time it's ten years is up it's pretty rough having lived on a, sometimes, vicious beach front so there are rusting issues.

My mechanic (a friend) says to me your policy of lots of oil changes and don't thrash them when they are cold works well for you and your cars. We have customers who don't have maintenance records but have every few years have a catatropic failure issue.

flyenby 06-25-2013 10:39 PM

my 1990 Chevy 1/2 ton short bed bought new ...and still running

petrolhead611 06-26-2013 03:07 AM

I've had my 924S since new in '86.
Drove a Renault Espace with 2 litre carburetted petrol engine for 450,000 miles in 9 years since bought new, and it was still running well when sold. I agree on frequent oil changes and not driving hard until fully warmed up. However my Mazda Premacy diesel that replaced the Espace only lasted 268,000 miles.

I'm just surprised the odometer is still working.

My longest would have to be the 4 years I spent with my Talon TSI in college.

kach22i 06-26-2013 03:57 AM

I bought my 1990 Geo Tracker new, it lasted 19-1/2 years.

Only about 160,000 miles on it.

Rust killed the electrical system, the body almost rusted off the frame - many stress cracks.

The exhaust system almost killed me, the weak part of the truck's design.

I've had my Porsche almost 10-years, second longest I've ever owned a car. I only put about 20,000 miles on it.

I've had my hovercraft for 23 years, and only about 100 hours on it.

72doug2,2S 06-26-2013 06:08 AM

19 years and counting - '94 TOY corolla. 237,000 miles, never had an issue with routine maintenance. (Wife bought it new)

notmytarga 06-26-2013 03:17 PM

Short answer - currently 11 years for my 1975 Targa. More detail:

1967 Bug - 1983-1990 - Restored while using it consistently until
1989 Probe GT - First new car. Traded in for
2000 Passat 4 Motion - wreaked by daughter in 2010
1975 911S Targa from 2002 to current - Driven daily when not being worked on (see sig) or too damn hot.
2007 Acura TL - 2008-2012 traded for new Outback for wife. Now
2007 Sienna - is my backup car.

So I'm averaging 10 years/car and the Targa is at 11 and will stay in the family as it has for 38 years. My USAA policy lists the Targa as vehicle #10, the others are currently 11, 13 & 14.

Let's see if I remember them all. Seems like a lot of turnover for someone averaging 10 yrs/ car. I'll blame the wife(s).
1- 67 Bug - I was 21, in college
2 - Buick Skylark - acquired with ExWife in 1988
3 - 89 Probe GL - the Buick died
4 - 89 Probe GT, mine was certainly slicker than hers - Bug gone soon therafter
5 - 1990? Sable wagon - three way trade from father, Probe GL to sister
6 - 1993? Ford Windstar - growing family, Sable traded, later dispatched with wife.
7 - 89 Acura Integra, acquired with 2nd wife - she drove a manual :)
8 - 2000 Passat - Goodbye Probe GT
9 - 2002 Sienna - three kids now, Acura sold privately
10- 2nd wife's father's Targa
11 - 2007 Sienna - Upgrade - other traded
12 - 2007 Acura TL - added in 2008 to move Passat to student use, 1400 miles!
13 - 2006 Sonata - bought in 2010 to replace wreaked Passat
14 - 2012 Outback - traded in Acura TL - moving Sienna to my control
15? - Need another for second daughter in nursing school - Ford Fusion/Focus?

There was a thread a while back about numbers of cars owned. My number is average - only because I'm 51 and there are now driving kids in the family. MAny of us have been through a lot of cars!

GH85Carrera 06-26-2013 07:26 PM

I have had my 1986 El Camino for 21 years. I swapped out the original 305 after 301,000 miles with a new 350. Ready for another 300k

A930Rocket 06-26-2013 07:50 PM

My 2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew with 200K miles. Still have it, but my son drives it now.

Next longest would be my 1987 930, but it wasn't a DD. Had it 12 years.

oldE 06-27-2013 03:01 AM

The '93 Passat Turbo diesel. Bought with just under 60,000km on it in 1995. Traded it in 2007 with around 430,000km.
Oil changes every 12,000km, brakes every 120,000, only things which failed were the alternator at 280,000 and the fuel injection pump at 380,000. I should have let it go when the pump went, but kept it another 16 months and traded it in on the Jetta we now drive.

The wife still misses that car.

Best
Les
