Oh deer...

While visiting a friend several days ago, a doe was perfectly comfortable munching on clover in his yard in the middle of the afternoon (not an unusual sight anymore....overpopulation). Talked to him a while ago, and he said the doe was back today with FOUR fawns in tow with her. Now I'm no deer expert, but I've personally never seen more than one Bambi at a time with does. A quick search shows they typically have 1 or 2, and 3 would be pretty rare. Any deer experts here...is four a freak of nature, or do does travel in groups (maybe the other does were still in the woods)? I had a couple of nicely racked bucks and at least one female (that I could see) munching at my back fence a few months ago (last fall, before the rut began) and my uncle, a deer expert, told me that was perfectly normal. I'd bet I've seen more deer over the last 3-4 years than I've seen in my entire life

Most does will have one the first year and if healthy will have twins the years following. I have seen triplets a few times, but never four. But it can happen. I was petting this one in my yard in may. It was born a few hours before and the mother hid it under a pine tree in the yard. It got up when I rode by on the tractor.

My deer knowledge is limited to the difference between Beer Nuts and deer nuts. Beer Nuts are $3.99 a bag and deer nuts are under a buck. (rimshot)!

Maybe it's some type of "Octo-mom" deer. I always thought it was 2 fawns at the most.

Deer do travel in "packs." My local golf course has a bunch of deer, and you see several does-with fawns-grazing together. Typically, there's one buck with the bunch around here.
