Don't leave home without it!....lesson learned the hard way today!
A beautiful day today here in southern Alberta, so I thought I'd take a quick drive in the SC before heading to the office. I'm only going down the road a bit.....maybe 10 Km round trip....do I need the radar detector? Ah, probably not....I'm not going out for long. Well, I got nabbed!!!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1372369924.jpg This LEO was extremely well concealed. He clocked me at 86 Km/hr in a 60 zone = $161.00! My first ticket in almost 8 years...argggh! NOTE TO SELF: DON'T BE A LAZY AZZ!....ALWAYS TAKE ALONG THE ESCORT WHEN GOING OUT FOR A DRIVE IN ANY OF YOUR VEHICLES!!! |
Didja at least call him dudley do-right?
|
I grab my V1 even if I am driving my old pick up.
|
Never do, that would be like walking out the door without pants !
|
radar on a gravel road? Do they get many rallye drivers there?
|
I use my Passport all the time and in your situation, I would bet it wouldn't of helped. Unless he is using X band from the 70's. Even when I am on the highway, if I don't have some cars in front, I cut it back.

Don't leave home with it. They are illegal here to have in a motor vehicle. You can buy them but if your caught with one in a vehicle it is a $500 fine. :)
If you are traveling thru MB they will stop you and if you are nice they will let you turn it off. Signs are on the highways when you enter the province telling you that they are illegal. |

I haven't used a radar detector in probably 20 years....have only had one ticket in a rental car.....
Simple solution.......do the speed limit, go fast when you know its clear for short bursts...... |
Officer, have you been eating donuts?
You're eyes looked glazed.... |
OR... You could have obeyed the speed limit.
|
$161!!!! Pffft!!!! That is lunch money!
|
Pfffh,
Radar detectors are for pansies, it's a cat and mouse game, and I haven't had a ticket in 10 years (well, green light cameras don't count) Geez you'd think the cops would be too busy at Tim's now they have green light cameras making millions for them. :D |

While I'm not a nut-job, wreckless driver, I do, on occasion, when it's safe, surpass the speed limit. The road I was on (Stealthn, you obviously know where and have driven on Old Banff Coach Road in Springbank) was clear of traffic and in good dry condition. This begs the question....do you fellow Pelicans....Peter you included... ALWAYS obey the speed limit? Is there a thread on PPOT that deals with this topic? Cheers! Alex |
That's still within city limit? On the eastern side of the city?
I found most people drive the speed limit in Calgary. We were there for 3 weeks last summer and most were very polite drivers. Down here, when the freeway opens up, we are doing 10-15 over. |
Alex - that sucks! I hate radar traps! What a waste of tax dollars!!!!!!!
That said - I'm like those who put the radar detector down years ago. I drive fast and exceed the speed limits every day but - am very careful about where I speed and how much over I go. It truly is a cat and mouse game. GREAT shot of the Targa, BTW! :) |

That was it for me... So I stick to the speed limit even if it annoys other drivers. I've actually made it into a game now. I see how close and for how long I can sit precisely on the speed limit. My record so far is 4 minutes 33 seconds. It's harder than you may think. For spirited driving I go to our local track at Mallala. Mallala - Motor Sport Park - Mallala Motor Sport Park |
Don't feel bad. I was nabbed first time in 13 yrs by drone at Utah/Colorado border. Same amount of money but I was in, and here is the embarrassing part, a Prius. 88mph in a 75.
Commence with flogging me. |

It saved me from a couple freeway radar traps last weekend. It looks so obvious when my windshield mounted v1 lights up and I move out of the fast lane and let other cars speed :p into the trap. |

The V1 is a permanent fixture in my car. On the weekends if we take the other vehicle, I'm less likely to speed.

Funny but everybody else in Calgary says that we are THE WORST drivers!....except for me of course!;) Alex |
Funny, years ago I got my radar detector confiscated in Alberta.....are they still doing that? (I never replaced it, they all use laser around here now....one quick click and your pulled over :( )
|
Never owned a radar detector. Never got a ticket. Stick to the speed limits and drive like an old lady. :D
|
Since I went into semi-retirement I'm no longer in much of a hurry. I don't even know where my V1 is right now. Back when I was in a hurry the best run I ever made was Sterling, Colorado to Lincoln, Nebraska - 360 miles in 4 hours in a Mercedes E-class.
|
Speeding in a straight line? Don't need a Porsche for that. If you're not late, and there's no curves, why speed?
|
86 in a 60. You we're doing almost 50% faster than the speed limit. I think you need to slow down a bit.

In English units, he was doing more than 16MPH faster than the 37.5 speed limit. It would be like doing almost 60 in a 40.
|
There changed it James ;)
|
I understood the sarcasm, but I was serious.

I have my own issues. Got a ticket in NY after leaving Watkins Glen a couple of weeks ago. Just sending it in this morning. No fine amount on tic. You send in said ticket the judge looks at it. If he got laid the night before maybe he'll be nice. If not he can tuck it to you I guess. So I have no idea the fine amount.
135 in a 104 zone LOL |
Australia is very bad for tickets. The speed limits are incredibly low and they have more GATSOs than the UK. Every time I've visited I got one.
|
Ah yeah, I was in Cali a couple of months ago and couldn't believe how they drive, fast and close. Here everyone is just slow.....
I love to open her up when it's safe to do so but there is no way I would drive the way I saw in Santa Clara, I was constantly hitting the brakes in the back seat of the cab :D |

I've been using a Escort Solo S3 in my cars since my last speeding ticket 4 years ago. I never leave home without it now and no speeding tickets since. A 911 is just too much of a cop magnet in the NY/NJ/CT Tri-State area. But then again I now keep my speed less than the speed limit plus 15 mph! :-)
|
No radar detectors here.
When they catch me, i just pay up. I don't really care as long as they don't zap me on an open stretch of highway. That could get really expensive, really fast.... Never been caught in the 911, lots of times in the company car. |
