New England daytrip ideas
Thank you all up-front for any ideas.
We are in Newport, RI for for a year. During the summer, fall we will have a little exploration time available. What should we consider? It'll be myself, wife, 14yo daughter. Limitations: cannot travel out of CONUS, need daytrips or overnighters. |

Head West for the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock on July 6th. A great place to watch a race a a lot for the entire family. There are B&Bs and hotels nearby.
Lime Rock Park - Lime Rock Park On the way back on Sunday, there are a lot of antique dealers and sites for the girls to check out. |

Come visit the Adirondack Park in upstate NY and Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. Great scenery, good roads and a little history of the northeast New York area.
Boston and Cape Cod after all the crowds go home. Eastern States Exposition in early September in Springfield, MA also the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Lots to see and do in southern Vermont and New Hampshire. Last edited by widgeon13; 05-26-2013 at 05:35 AM.. |

I love the coast of Maine. If your family likes to camp there are any number of excellent state and federal parks. There are numerous RV rental places near the coast so you can camp in comfort.
I am also very fond of Halifax, NS. You may also like Burlington, Vt...consider renting a house boat on Lake Champlain for a few days. Montreal is a short hop from there as well. Mount Washington is a great day trip: http://www.mountwashington.org/ http://mtwashingtonautoroad.com/drive-yourself/ Almost too much to see and do!

If you're a history buff, look at Boston, Lexington and Concord MA. Over night in southern Maine, look at Portlands Old Port.

Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket and Block Island are very nice, if a little expensive. Once there rent bikes to get around, or walk.
You can get there via ferry from a number of ports..

And Henrys Diner in Burlington, best pancakes ever.

entertaining the idea

I agree with all of the ideas above. Definitely visit Old Sturbridge Village and some whale watching. In the fall, New England is known for its fall foliage and tours. Beautiful. I grew up taking rides on my parents' boat up the Connecticut River every fall to see the foliage.

And of course you can take the Mt. Washington auto road to the worlds worst weather. During our Mountain Melee last week a few of us were going to go up but it was only open to 5 miles up. The rest of the road was closed due to icing. 27F with 52 mph winds. The view from 5 miles up...

I remember [vividly] going there when I was around 10 years old. When I went back a couple years ago it was so amazing - the show was exactly as I remembered it. A few new rigs though - The Albatros D is spectacular.
