strawberry season

There is nothing like a sun-warmed strawberry right off the vine. Nothing you can buy in a store or farmer's market can compare. This is turning out to be a great year for them. I've picked 2 gallons from this 4x10 patch already and they are just hitting the peak of the season.

Good stuff

I have a few plants that a pull a few berries from every few days. The rabbits or squirrels get the better end of the deal but I'll take what I can get.

We have a bunch of volunteer strawberries in our rose garden. It is not huge production but during the season, we can walk out there and get 15-20 berries whenever we want. They are small but very sweet.

Maybe I should start actively caring for the plants. What do you do with yours, in terms of feeding, mulching, or whatever?

That's a fine looking rhubarb in the back bed - Do I detect a fondness for strawberry/rhubarb pie?

Good eyes. Yes! And jam and compote.
A slice of pound cake, some vanilla ice cream on it, strawberry/rhubarb compote on that, and top it off with whipped cream. Mmmm....

You're in California and I'm not familiar with your seasons, so YMMV. Here we mulch them with straw in the fall to keep the roots from freezing. Pull weeds etc. in the spring until they finish bearing (about July 1), then cut the tops down to about 2" high and fertilize.
It helps to hit every deer on the road with your pickup that you can. They love strawberry leaves.

I was jealous as heck when I read your post this afternoon at work.

Then I got home to find my dear wife had picked the first (of many) strawberries out of our garden and guess what was for dessert!

I love summertime.
Best

Strawberries and raspberries are gone for the season. I miss them already, but I made a decent stock of jam and a strawberry/rhubarb pie that would make you cry. Blackberries will be ready in a week and then gone too soon. Just harvested the garlic and I can coast awhile as soon as the blackberries are preserved, then the tomatoes start ripening.
