DC tells wal mart to fly a kite
DC council tells walmart 'we don't want your $8.50 per hour jobs'.
Fox entertainer Eric Bolling asks Marion Barry how he can possibly make sense of doing this to Walmart and not to the big unionized grocery stores who can now gain an advantage by paying $8.50/hr instead of the $12.50 demanded of walmart. Marion Barry, the man who smoked crack, smoked Bolling. 'they're unionized and don't pay anywhere near $8.50'. Comical exchange.

I think its the other way around. DC is a perfect example of liberal ridiculousness.

what if people got jobs at Walmart and got off welfare, that might hurt the democrats, unless they can still get welfare with their Walmart job. That should be WIN-WIN for the dimocrats in DC.

There IS no shopping. NO jobs. Say what you want about Walmart... In some ways it's the people in NW that don't want people in the ghetto to have jobs. The people that don't want Walmart wont go into that part of town to not shop there.

There are still lots of mom and pop stores in DC, but no one is gonna stop going to them because of a Wal Mart. When I lived there, I went to the local mom and pop stores because they were a walkable distance, I didn't have a car and I wasn't buying more than I could carry home by foot. WM is not gonna change that. Anyone in DC who has a car and wants to make a weekly shopping trip is still gonna drive out to Fairfax if they want to go to WM or Pentagon City for Costco. But a WM in DC would not draw a single shopper from MD or VA. WM is better off staying in the burbs. Eff DC. They deserve what they get. There was an article in the Post a few years ago about a guy who had been bagging groceries at a Safeway in NE DC and made $60k a year. I'm guessing their prices weren't real competitive.

The DC City Council is owned by unions. Kids can't get out of their miserable public school system, much less make an inroad on college, the uneducated can't get jobs, more than half the city is on welfare, the unemployment rate is sky high and the Council pulls this. Another cycle of dependency. The rich get richer the poor get poorer and the liberals blame WalMart.
BTW the only shopping in DC is in Georgetown. But a Snaidero, Bulthap, Ligne Roset or Dean and Deluca's isn't going to have cotton towels at a low price much less antifreeze by the gallon. Rick is right- everyone who can heads straight to Maryland or Virginia to get what they need. |

Actually several of their planned new stores are very close to the Maryland line so no biggie, WM will just build in Md, close to the DC line. They actually did this on a smaller (town) level where the local town didn't want them there for the same reasons most are posting here so they built a new store @100 yds outside the town limits.

WalMart is nothing but bad for all of us. We need to promote smaller locally owned and operated businesses. Not that the motivation for the DC council was remotely close to this.
