Our puppy's itchy ears are driving her nuts- any ideas?

We have a 7 month old Maltese-Poodle and she can spend an agonizing amount of time scratching at her ears. She was just whimpering as she was doing it just now.
Been to the vet twice, who tugged out some hairs and gave us some over the counter drops, but says the ears are not infected.
Does anyone have any good ideas that worked for their loved ones?

new vet.

look in the ears. is there any dark stuff? do they have a smell like iron and/or sweet?

my pup did the same thing. turned out she had a yeast infection in her ear. some gentamicin drops, all was good as new. she was going bonkers.

ears

Likely cause is a food allergy.

Our 10 month old male Boxer is allergic to food that has bird (chicken, duck etc) in it, same for treats. He eats anything with it and he is scratching his ears until he cries. Then our female Boxer comes over, pins him down and tries to clean his ears to make him feel better....

Male Baxter (10 months):

Female Chloe (2 years):

Might be ear mites. Ivomec in food or shot from a syringe into the mouth will get about anything that tries to hang on to your dog. Be sure to follow the dosage per weight on the box.

Better check with a Vet, too. I've heard Ivomec can kill a long haired dog.

Ivomec is the active ingredient in heart worm medicine. With 3 large dogs, we buy ours at Tractor Supply. Injectable (for cattle). Few drops in the food bowl monthly, confirmed by our vet. A $46 bottle lasts us about 3 years for our mastiff, golden and mutt.

had this happen with a friends Chihuahua I was in charge of for a few months. It got so bad the ears were raw from him scratching so much. Went to my vet (Ive got a Collie/Lab mix), and they are excellent. The dog had quite a bit of ear wax...the drops helped to loosen it up and then I was advised to carefully use a qtip to work the rest out. That, and then some normal A&D ointment and within a weeks time, everything cleared up and he was back to his normal, over-assertive, yapping self

My Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever had an ear might infection...drove her nuts!! But I would think a decent Vet would have caught that.

We have field spaniel who is prone to ear infection. When we first got him he scratched his ears nonstop and always seemed agitated. 2/3 hydrogen peroxide, 1/3 rubbing alcohol solution in the ears once a week has solved the problems completely. No scratching or irritation.

Food Allergies. Our Pug has bad ear scratching. The other pug would always try to clean her ears for her. I would clean them with the various solutions available. Went to the vet yesterday and he said allergies. Got a shot and some pills and she is a 100% better today.

Our lab has trouble with ear infections. We use baby wipes (without lotion) to clean his ears.

I had a similar problem with my cat.
The vet couldnt figure it out.
Baby Oragel stopped the cat from scratching his ears -numbed them-and because of that the ear problem went away quickly.
