Anyone else into growing plants from seed...or cuttings?
Here's what I ordered: ANGELONIA, SERENITA WHITE - 10 PELLETED SEEDS ICE PLANT, STARDUST HARDY - 25 PELLETED SEEDS ICE PLANT, TABLE MOUNTAIN HARDY - 50 SEEDS LEMON GRASS, EAST INDIAN - 1/4 GRAM PETUNIA, GIOCONDA ROSE - 10 PELLETED SEEDS PETUNIA, WAVE PINK - 10 PELLETED SEEDS PHORMIUM, RAINBOW STRIPED HYBRIDS - 25 SEEDS SALVIA, MERLEAU BLUE - 30 SEEDS SALVIA, NEW DIMENSION BLUE - 30 SEEDS SALVIA, NEW DIMENSION ROSE - 30 SEEDS I ordered from Swallowtail Seeds - located in Santa Rosa, CA Have never used them before but am impressed with their website - not only informative and easy to navigate but also easy to place my order - cart and checkout process very nicely done. Also free shipping on $30.00 or more orders. There are lots of seed companies you can purchase from but I was interested specifically in obtaining some seed for Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax) as the nurseries around here do not carry this plant and it is one I have wanted to include in my projects for years. I know it is very popular on the west coast. This seed company sells a mix so I know I will get some of the larger variety Phormium. I purchased some seed not long ago from Australia and some of those seeds have now germinated, amongst them Queensland Grass Plant and Dracaena Draco. I also have some flats with cuttings in them including a compact Bromeliad called Neoregelia 'Fireball'.....one of my favourite Bromeliads. We are still in the growing season here but not long from now we will be moving into Fall and away from the growing season so I'm trying to take advantage of the season while I can. For all the flack Florida gets - it's a fantastic climate for growing and cultivating plants! ![]()

It's been determined as fact that I can't grow midnight blue salvia or arizona sunflowers in our yard. (The bumble bees were following us out into the parking lot after purchasing so they must be good.)
Between dog piss, super summer heat, poor soil, and random dead spots, every_single_year it's a toss-up as to what grows or not. Some plant's don't grow at all, and others grow out of control...taking up precious space. I rarely destroy new plants from seed, so it also compounds the problem in a small yard. "There is last year's garden and there is next year's" Baz- Look into the Heritage Seed sites. Some of those are hearty versions of the same varietys. A neighbor specializes in some plant(forget the name), and has 15-20 varieties. |

I try to grow plenty during summer. As long as the colors are nice and you can smoke it.

Thanks for all the replies and the star.
Guess this isn't the forum for gardeners and plant lovers. ....present company excluded, John and Markus (I think).

I'm am very new to planting in general. We have never lived anywhere long enough to allow me to see the results. We have pretty much planned to stay where we are for the long haul so I am trying some things. I've never had much luck growing from seeds but I do propagate with cuttings. My Macropylla Hydrangeas are the easiest so far. I am going to try to collect seeds from my Fatsia Japonica this fall and winter and see what I can get.
I have lots of books and reading everything I can. Give me a crash course on your seeds: What soil do you use? How long before there is an actual plant you can put in the yard? Do you use a heat mat or lamps? Water from below? Looking forward to future pictures and progress reports.
