Was the 968 the first vehicle to have variable valve timing.

I was finishing up on a timing chain/guides, water pump/ timing belt job on a 93 968 today, and got to thinking. I cannot honestly remember any cars earlier than this , that had Variable camshaft timing.
I remember some of the v8 benz cars had it by the mid 90's but cannot really think of anything else even close to that era with cam adjusters.
Porsche was always pretty well ahead with technology, especially in those years.
Anything else come to mind?

Variable valve timing has been around since the 1920's (Bristol Jupiter aircraft engine). Alfa Romeo was the first to mass produce a working example in the 1980 Spider, even though Porsche had patents for designs back in the 50's and Fiat in the 60's, but neither developed it for production.

The early maxima se had it too. It is one of the weak points of those engines.

BMW VANOS first appeared in 1992. I had to look it up, but I remember them touting it.
