Back from first camping trip in old trailer

Finally got to go camping in my old trailer, its a 1964 model. There are still a few mod's to be done, but nothing big. The Avalanche pulled it fine and even got 12.5mpg. It was all interstate and very flat drive.

It was only about 300 miles round trip. This was our first trip and we met up with some friends. Just trying it out and making sure things work.

I have a light that needs to be replaced and a few things to add. But nothing major, I replaced or checked everything relating to towing. I was actually putting on new wheels and tire's the morning I left. It still had the old split rim wheels on it.

What does an old trailer like that cost?

It's a 1964 Steamline, 26 ft. It weighed 4,700 lbs when I took it to the scales this summer. That did not include food, beverages, ect. I paid $2,500 to a guy I meet at a truck stop. Was told everything worked and it was good to go. Well I should have looked it over a little closer. I replaced the water heater, water tank, some of the floor from the leaking water tank and heater area. I pulled out the fridge, it weighed a ton, I still need to replace it. I replaced the water lines with pex because the copper had froze at some point and had multiple leaks. I put in a A/C unit and new flooring, new mattresses. Stripped the paint off the interior walls and cabinets, they are all aluminum, and painted the cabinet doors and drawers. I also replaced the split rim wheels and put on new tires.

Ive got a lot of time and probably about $5,000 to $6000 in it. The only big thing I have left is the refrigerator. I'm watching for a used one to come up.

Man that thing is beautiful. You should be really proud + plus even though you had to do a lot of things to it, you know it inside & out & the condition of everything. Enjoy.

Way cool. Good to see others preserving classics.

I have a 1948' Travelite that I use for guests at my lake place. It has real lino, cherry cabinets, a stainless steel sink/drainboard and NO plastic anywhere. Polishes up great and looks very retro-modern.

I had to replace all wiring, plumbing, some flooring, fridge and stove. We paid $500 to get it moved to our property and probably have $5K into it as well. It will never see the road again but it sure is great to stay in. Check out this site for plenty of great rigs.http://www.vintagetrailercrazy.com/

I remember when you got it and started work, what? last Spring. You're quick!

Looks great! How about some interior pics or some close ups?

If you get a chance, try out some junkyard looking for a fridge, as well as keeping an eye on ebay, craigslist etc.

I know of a boneyard here in CO that has a few travel trailers. I actually pulled the rock guard off of the front of one of them fora friends old Red Dale.

I have a mid 70's camper, and like you, have done a lot of work too it. One of the days I might bite the bullet and get another one, but I don't want too yet.

Glad to hear it went well.

Bill

The hard part was stripping the paint from the interior. There really isn't much to these trailers. I still have a ways to go to make it really look nice. I still have some polishing to do. I havn't done above the window on the drivers side or front. I don't plan on a mirror finish, to many dents and imperfections, but I do want to get rid of some of the oxidation. Still lots of details to make it look better up close. The interior still needs to have the walls and ceiling cleaned up some but is closer to getting finished. I am going to add some shelves in a couple of cabinets. And add a small cabinet in the kitchen. I also plan on putting in a table that folds out from the wall.

Some pics I took a little further along.

I still have a lot of small details to take care of. Handles on the drawers. Cleaning up the window and frames. Still have some trim to put down on the floor.

We just got back from our third trip to the Indiana Dunes. We have gone to South Florida, and several spots in the Mid-West. We are now done with camping. We have had the trailer for close to 4 years now and used it a lot.

Time to let someone else have it for a while.
