I've camped an scuba dived out of my 944. It's all about how few comforts you can live with and how compact you can pack!

mini camping
I saw a man and woman on a motorcycle pulling a very small pop up camper once! Now that is minimalist camping! Personally, I prefer my 27 foot long travel trailer with the queen size bed, full kitchen and bath! But, I have camped in the back of my Ford Excursion. With the third row seat removed and the second row folded, a double bed air mattress will fit nicely.

My Coleman sundowner hangs very nicely off the bottom of my backpack. I'll take the nylon hilton and some back woods every time

That photoshoot needs a good looking woman. In my opinion.

I've always liked those tiny campers that are just big enough to sleep in. I'd like to have one for the 12 hours of Sebring and other racing events.

Just about any wagon will work in a pinch. My youngest son and I went to Road Atlanta for a weekend in the early to mid 90's in the family boat when he was about 10 or 12. Rain was highly likely, so we didn't even bother with the tent... committed fully to the wagon.
![]() Ours was an earlier model... an '88 or '89, but the same blue. We just folded the back seat forward and threw our food, sleeping bags, and foam pad in and hit the road. When we got there, I backed in facing the track about 100 feet north of the bridge and we were set. In the rain, we'd flip up that back glass, drop the tailgate, and spectate from there. It turned out to be a great weekend. He still talks about it. One of his memories is when we'd put mustard on saltines, add halved vienna sausages, and make a miniature sandwich... he remembers how the mustard would squirt out the holes in the saltines.

My experience sleeping in cars has been limited. I remember three of us sleeping in my VW Dasher station wagon in the Squaw Valley ski resort parking lot one winter weekend. It was bitterly cold but with down bags we were fine. I've also slept in the rental car at Le Mans, two years. That's it.
That Mini camping looks, well, intimate. |

I plan on building a teardrop trailer to pull behind my cars. We won't be using it as a sleeper for the most part as we prefer tents. I done a few sketches based on internet plans and will start looking for a suitable frame shortly.

Now in 993 land ...

Trailers are great for bad weather camping, i.e. hunting or skiing. But then they have to be a little bigger than those tear drop jobs, so you can actually have breakfast and get dressed inside.
The major down side to a trailer IMHO is the 55 mph speed limit. I work Mon-Fri and if I want to get away for the weekend, driving time is important. It also can't be stowed in a shelf like the typical car camping equipment. One day I will own a Sportsmobile and be done. ![]() G |
