Can you recomend a good sitcom?

We hate commercials so we DVR everything.

So far we have our Favorite: NCIS, then Elementary, then NCIS Los Angeles (good but not great), then Hawaii 5-0 (Just OK but I watch it because I love Hawaii), Burn Notice gets honorary mention but I hesitate to get my wife started on that series (as much as I like it). We are also watching the Sherlock BBS series on netflicks.

As you can see we are a bit heavy on the crime shows... would like to lighten it up with some good comedy. (no evening cartoons please)

My wife had me try Private Practice (not a comedy I know) and waaaaaay too much of a soap opera for me.

Is there anything good on regular TV we are missing?

We did Downton Abbey (much better than I expected) but they are slooooow in coming out with the forth season.

Arrested Development.
The Big Bang Theory.

Steve Carlton 07-24-2013 02:37 PM

Modern Family (awesome), Rules of Engagement, The Mindy Project

livi 07-24-2013 02:45 PM

Dallas.

masraum 07-24-2013 02:54 PM

Ditch Elementary and replace it with Perception which is another Holmes and Watson show, but better. Another vote for The Big Bang Theory. Also Warehouse 13 is funny/light but not really a sitcom.

krystar 07-24-2013 03:02 PM

Scandal

Continuum cause i'm a scifi freak.

House of Cards on netflix if you haven't watched it yet.

If you like funny nerds and can laugh at anal OCD jokes, Big Bang. The blonde is in my top ten dreams....

The old cowboy/westerns are a big yuck as well as Andy Griffith.

Fat people comedies, suck.

craigster59 07-24-2013 03:36 PM

Mike and Molly seems pretty popular.

weseeeee 07-24-2013 04:11 PM

Mike and Molly, Modern Family and Anger management.

We like Rules of Engagement... pretty funny stuff.

These are from an episode when these guys were supposed to be working late... can't remember the details, but these scenes are occuring in an an empty store where one of the wives had thought about opening a bakery or something...

Depending on how much you like quirky humor, Raising Hope could be worth a look: "Jimmy becomes a single parent to an infant after the mother he had a one-night stand with ends up on death row."

If you can find the first episode online somewhere, it will give you a good idea of what the show is like. Imagine Martha Plimpton as Jimmy's cigarette-smoking mom seeing a TV alert about the serial killer (who is sitting in her kitchen eating breakfast with the family) and picking up the 13" TV sitting on the counter and whacking the killer in the back of the head. It's almost like Coen brothers gone full-on comedy.

Raising Hope (TV Series 2010

User review: I have to admit, from the previews, I wasn't planning on watching this show. I was simply setting up my DVR to record another Fox show and figured, why not record this one too since I have been a fan of Martha Plimpton since the Goonies. I am so glad I did.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!! The show is hilarious. I go from laughing out loud, thinking, "I can't believe they did that" to feeling warm and fuzzy. Garret Dillahunt is absolutely hilarious, Lucas Neff is adorable, and I love watching Martha Plimpton's character capture both a roughness and sweetness at the same time. She is brilliant. I find myself watching the episodes twice and laughing out loud each time. Looks like a great show and I hope it continues to stay as funny as the first two episodes have been.

Check out Suits, and Graceland on USA.

LeeH 07-24-2013 04:14 PM

New Netflix series that looks interesting. From the same folks that did Weeds. Upper middle class woman goes to jail after something from her distant past catches up with her:

tevake 07-24-2013 04:26 PM

If you like a bad azz like Gibbs on NCIS, check out Longmire kind of a modern western with a strong main character.

Baz 07-24-2013 05:16 PM

Of course, in my opinion.....the best sitcom in TV history was M*A*S*H.......

<iframe width="640" height="480" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GlGJ2BkWzkc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I know there are reruns running somewhere.

Sounds crazy but that show actually impacted my life....

Oh Haha 07-24-2013 05:18 PM

Hell on Wheels.

It's not a comedy but I find it very interesting and I don't even care for storyline shows.

Rules of Engagement is very funny.

Baz 07-24-2013 05:26 PM

The second best ever sitcom (in my opinion)...."Cheers"....

mikesride 07-24-2013 07:51 PM

Sorry....I only watch prime time cartoons!!!!! (And breaking bad);)

Steve Carlton 07-24-2013 07:55 PM

Do you want current sitcom recommendations or classics as well. I'm not sure why non-sitcoms are getting into this thread.

Steve Carlton 07-24-2013 07:55 PM

I used to like Babylon 5.

Oh, sorry. Sci-fi and no longer on TV. My bad.

Steve Carlton 07-24-2013 07:56 PM

Victory By Design was really good.

romad 07-24-2013 09:35 PM

"Can you recommend a good sit com?"........... breaking bad and babylon 5?

A bit of a hijack but.
This was the best car show ever, in my mind. greatest cars, great settings, true sound of the cars under way. Filmed beautifully! outstanding!
I wish that Allan DeCadeny would do a series on the many classic rallies going on in Europe, and follow along connecting with the folks and cars doing the rally.

Schumi 07-24-2013 10:11 PM

I am nearing the last few episodes of my three-month long journey of watching every episode of all 11 seasons of Frasier.

A modern classic, and more refined that Cheers IMO.

Paco Anton 07-24-2013 11:14 PM

You might want to give Castle a try. It is crime solving with a funny approach. My wife an I just finished watching the first 5 and really enjoyed it.

We have also liked CSI Miami and 24.

petrolhead611 07-25-2013 02:31 AM

Curb Your Enthusiasm

cruisin 07-25-2013 02:42 AM

IMHO

Big Bang Theory
Rules of engagement

oldies:
Mash
Cheers
Frasier
Barney Miller
Night Court

Shows that really suck:
Modern Family
Mike & Molly

For a somewhat whimsical crime show that is great:
Castle

Groesbeck Hurricane 07-25-2013 03:13 AM

I'll throw in some older ones:

Comedy:

Coupling (the BBC version!!!)

Are You Being Served? (and do follow with Grace and Favour)

S.O.A.P.

Fawlty Towers

The Black Adder (all series)

Drama:

Rumpole of The Bailey

Poirot

The Avengers

Wire in the Blood

Space 1999

Monarch of the Glenn

Tervuren 07-25-2013 04:23 AM

I recommend pelican parts OT, and PARF. The 928 technical section has had some good episodes to.

pete3799 07-25-2013 04:39 AM

Back in the day Taxi was my favorite.

Riiiight. Probably the funniest, best-written sitcom on TV right now. IMHO, of course. I've got to believe you haven't given the show much of a chance.

Orange is the new black
Sons of anarchy

All on netflix.

scottmandue 07-25-2013 06:46 AM

Big Bang is super funny, well written, the lady is super easy to look at and, my wife is a big fan...

But...

I work at a science museum... it reminds me WAY too much about my workplace... and Sheldon is my boss... imagine working for Sheldon.

Victory by design IS a great show... when it first came out I DVR'er every episode and watched them... wife is not a car nut and not sure I could get her to curl up on the couch after dinner and watch it (same with top gear).

Trying to get away from violent shoot-um-ups so sons of anarchy is out (I watched a few episodes by myself) breaking bad looks pretty violent too.

I'm considering Mike and Molly, the previews I have caught look funny.

I'm also a huge Poirot fan (did you see they just filmed the very last episode?) but I am trying to find something other than murder mystery (the actor did a cool documentary on the Orient Express that I just watched)

I have a bunch of "through the wormhole" DVR'ed too... but also not light wife friendly viewing.

We do watch Frasier some times... always good.

I was a big MASH fan back in the day... but tried it recently and it seems flat... I love Alan Alda but Hawkeye comes off as a constantly pissed off condescending jerk.

YMMV
