Jeep Oil Pressure - Too high?

Drove my son's Jeep Cherokee (99 2WD 4.0L straight six) yesterday for the first time in a while. I noticed the oil pressure guage showed almost max pressure (80psi, and only drops slightly at idle). We changed the oil/filter and no difference. It is not over filled. Perhaps it's always read high and I just didn't notice, or maybe a guage out of calibration.

It runs great in every regard even with 166k on the clock. He'll be taking it to college in a few weeks (5 hours away). Any reason for concern? Anything I should check?

See if you can find the values for the sending unit and put a meter on it. If it's not too much, swap it out. That will be the cheapest fix if it's is the fix.

Replace the sending unit, aka oil pressure switch. They are known to go bad. Should be like 30bux.

The beauty of the jeep is that it will run with zero pressure or almost no oil at all. Not a big worry, but the sending unit is the problem. Check out jeep forums.

This is the opposite of any early pcar owner: Where the dash guage drops to zero at idle.

Yep, that makes sense. Turned the ignition on without starting the engine and it shows 20psi. Will replace sender. Thanks.
