Spanish police bust fake Ferrari ring

Spanish police said Wednesday they have broken up a racket by fraudsters who converted ordinary cars to resemble deluxe models such as Ferraris and sold them on the Internet.
Officers raided two garages where the conversions were carried out near the eastern city of Valencia, a police statement said.
They arrested eight people suspected of converting and selling the cars and seized 10 cars 17 fake Ferraris and two imitation Aston Martins.
“The supposed deluxe cars were advertised on two websites for about 40,000 euros ($53,000), compared to the more than 200,000 euros that an authentic model would cost on the legal market,” the police said.
The suspects “themselves made the fibre glass pieces to transform the cars” and faked the badges of the deluxe models to complete the job.
“The final appearance of the supposed deluxe vehicles in their external and internal design and even in the details of the engine simulated to perfection the look of the original models,” the statement said.

$50K?

Hardly seems worth the effort.

How profitable could that have been?

According to the news here the buyers did know they were buying fakes so it is a case of copyright infringement pursued by Ferrari lawyers rather than a scam to the buyers.

Close to Porsche forcing the removal of badges from Speedster replicas.

Funny nevetheless.

That is a Faux-rarri. I doubt any buyers thought they were real. That is for the folks that want to impress the other drivers on the road.

Laws regarding replicas, quality ones or not, interesting. I've heard that if any fabricated Ferrari where to make their way in to Italy, they'd be confiscated. The Norwood P4's come to mind.

I'm not sure I'd be interested in a fake Ferrari, but I've entertained buying a speedster replica.

most of these are for poseurs that can't afford the real deal. The market in Spain is probably decent as import duty for a real car would be enormous. So a 50k toyota rebody makes it attractive

Well... since Spain and Italy are both part of the European Union there are not any import duties for Ferraris as the EU is a free trade zone with no borders or customs for imports.

Now if we talk about the recession, the 27% unemployment rate and the credit crunch we may find the real reason

Saw this fake F-Car over the weekend, looked nice, seemed to have the right lines. Pardon my crappy cell phone pics.
