Son moving to Florida State for graduate school. Need advice

So my 23 YO son will be moving to Florida to attend graduate school. He will, as part of his agreement with the school, need to become a Florida resident. My concern is with his car. The car is in my name and I carry the insurance on my group plan. Will he need to insure it in Florida? Must we transfer the title to him and then to a Florida license? Is this really necessary? He really doesn't have the income to afford his own insurance policy. What is the correct thing to do? Thanks PP brain trust!!!

Title does not need to be in his name. Check with your insurance agent re: the insurance, he may need a separate policy since he will be a resident of a different state. As a Florida resident, he'll need to get a FL DL - we have "Real ID" so original birth cert (they wouldn't take my certified copy, made me pay $15 to get a new one at that desk over there, use your current certified copy to prove it is you), proof of social, and several proofs of address (utility bill, etc) Good news is that a CCW permit is easy - just can't carry on college campuses

 Out of State Plates

Most states have a 30 day limit on using out of state plates when one has become a resident. Besides, you might find that insurance and taxes will be lower in Florida! One thing that you might want to check on is if his current car/truck is on the high theft list. If so, it might pay to change it out to something that is not! Good luck at FSU.

Go Noles! I'd get the tags changed. The cops around Tallahassee can be tough.

Out of any state that you could get away with out of state plates for a few years Florida is the one. When I was 16 I got my drivers license in Florida and my car had Colorado tags and continued to have Colo. tags.

If the tag has a valid date you'll be good. BTW, you realize he picked FSU because it has the best lookin' girls in the southeast don't you?

As I understand it, if you own the car and insure the car, he can drive it in FL as long as you give him permission to do so. No need to change anything. Confirm with your ins agent.

Thank you for all the help! We plan to keep the car in my name and insurance. I contacted our insurance and let them know that my son will be using my car in florida for an undetermined length of time and all they needed was an address of where it will be parked. Thanks all! And he has a girlfriend in Ohio....for how long will be the question???

good advice, actually his advisor will be telling him that often why not just call the DMV or Email them to be certain? BTW - what field in grad. school? re Ohio - he will want a car that is fun to drive on the backroads, and NPS parkways to link the two areas

I agree...... HE will be in the Chemistry department. He double majored in Chemistry and Physics but enjoys the Chem Lab work the most. Eventually hopes to become a professor.

The Registration will not be a problem as long as it's in your name. If you sign the title over to your son he will need to register it in Florida. As mentioned getting a FL Drivers License will take some serious proof of ID. btw, FSU is a great place to see a college football game....you should check their schedule and plan a visit

I was at FSU. Got a Florida license because my Illinois expired, and I couldn't make it home to renew it. Drove cars titled and registered in Illinois no problem. As long as the registration is current what do the cops care. For all they know you loaned the car to your kid. It is a college town. Cops know damn well kids come from out of state with out of state tags. FSU football game weekend starts around Tuesday...the kegs roll out Thursday....it is an experience.

Keep it registered out of state should be no problem. New registrations in Florida are now charged $400 for a first set of license plates too.
