Regardless of the possible circumstances, if there are any aspects of a transaction that give you pause.........pass. Simple advice that has served me well over the years.

I'd say this qualifies.

are there any 3rd party entity in CA, such as Title Co or you buddy Used car dealer can be as intermediary in this deal, presuming few hundred bucks cost worth of try to use their service in this case...

Probably not a scam but too much weirdness to deal with. The driving would have scared me the most - cars can take some abuse, but it isn't great if they run it 100% all the time, potentially when cold too. I run across weirdo owners every now and then and don't deal with them.

I sure would have liked that car - can't beat black for the first 10 minutes after washing the car. :D
