No need to YELL. I don't think people here care quite that much about safety.

Are they using Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries? Lithium polymer I would have thought would have caught fire if breached. Maybe they just armour the pack well.

- I am not YELLING, it just how copy and paste works from article...

- I think safety should come FIRST don't matter what, ... or it just me?

- Lithium battery is just the name what general public referring to it, but they are different chemistry, wherefore different properties...

My 2c...

My 2c...
If you thought safety should come first, you wouldn't be driving your 911.

Compared to even today's compact cars with all of their safety advances, a classic 911 isn't a very safe place to be.

But do you know which chemistry they use? It is a big difference. On my school's Formula Electric car we ran LiFeP for a year and didn't need to worry about thermal runaway (still had a charge balancer to get the most use out of the pack). We switched to LiPo's and had to monitor each individual cell for temperature as well as charge. Not that we would do anything about thermal runaway- we would just know that if the the car stops unexpectedly that it means get out quick and watch it burn real bright.

I finally drove one...THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED!

My only complaint is that it is a big car. As soon as they come out with a smaller SUV type vehicle...I'm in! Not to "save the world" but simply because it is such a cool car!

It's probably just you.

Safety is way, way down on my list of features for my vehicles. Nowhere near first.

Congrats Bro!!! You've bitten by the same EV bug too

I am telling you, driving EV is like a turbo on steroids.... I can outrun almost every gas car in "regular" mode, and when I turn "race" mode...

I agree. Steering, brakes and suspension and superb and the TORQUE....it's like being at the peak of the power band in my ST, but it's at the full RPM range.

They are releasing the Model X early 2014 - Model X | Tesla Motors

Father in law has the "S". No issues in 10+ months of ownership, great ride and power, and full of gadgets and technology. Really impressive.

THIS is the only way an electric car will catch on. Some one trying to scam money from the greenie movement will run out of flower-power to sell cars. Electric cars need to stand on their viability.

Flieger - I run Li-Po's on my RC, the hardshell packaging has been greatly improved. There still are issues that require you to need to carefully monitor things, especially on a cell by cell bassis.

I'll read the article on the Tesla's batteries when I can.

Btw, cars started off as whacky toys that managed to pique the interest of a enough sporting individuals. Tesla, starting with an exotic sports car marketed to the same group of people that got the gasoline auto onto its feet.

One of the interesting things they are doing with the Tesla design, is making it so batteries can be quick swapped. That is gonna rock.

Exactly!

THIS is the only way an electric car will catch on. Some one trying to scam money from the hotrod movement will run out of thrust-power to sell cars. Electric cars need to stand on their superior vehicle dynamics.

This makes much more sense than the fragmented story my wife was trying to translate to me. She indicated that it was the roadster , and that didn't make any sense.

Speaking of "Roadster" - it was and it is 1/2 Tesla and 1/2 Lotus, and as you imagine your hands are tight when you try to squeeze something into anothet thing - it not always work as advertised....

HERE is the another video on this: Elon Musk: Tesla to make affordable electric car in three to four years - CBS News

Tesla is renowned for its battery innovations, some of which are secret. They do use an existing technology used for laptops but alter the packaging somehow.

GM has formed a task force to figure out how Tesla is doing it, so that indicates there is some there, there.
