My up north project

Some may know I sold all of my cars and have been focusing on 4 acres I own on a lake up north. I figured I would start a thread to show progress along the way. Next weekend they start building. here is what I have so far.

1 of the concrete slab and the septic.

2 of me on the lake with my little outboard that has sat in the basement for years.

3. my youngest son and our new puppy.

I will update next week with more info.

It is going to be a 900 SF home 2 bedroom 1 bath. So really just a cabin. but I plan to rent it out on a weekly basis when its done. but I will enjoy it a bunch myself as well. as this was my grandpa's land years ago and as a kid I would do some of the best fishing of my life. Great memories.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1376255028.jpg

Got a small place in the UP, just north of Vilas Cty. God's country for sure.

Good luck with your build.

Gillett WI near Shawano to one side a nd 40 minutes west of greenbay so about
2:45 of a drive for me. but its nice because if you are a packer fan you can drive there or even about 40 minutes from timber rattlers baseball

the lake is only 25 acres but about 35 feet deep so a wide variety of fish . the town is sleepy only 1000 people in it some small industry there they make mirrocraft boats there. The nice things is almost everything is closed on sundays just like the old days.

The boat motor is sears elgin from the 50's and starts with about 1-2 pulls everytime. after sitting 5 years it took 6 pulls and it started right up. here is another picturehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1376265355.jpg

Hey Ben...

Thanks for the pics and project update.

I'm in the trades (landscape and irrigation) and have participated on a lot of projects so can appreciate your endeavour.

I have a client from Wisconsin (Elkhorn) who is a huge sports fan and we have fun during the season - coming up in fact! he just sent me an email last week about the night scrimmage/family night the Packers do every year. That is very nice for the fans.

Also have a good friend who has a place in New Glarus and also down here (Ft. Myers) - we spent a couple years together in corporate sales and I learned a lot from him and we've kept in touch.

I gotta get up there one day....

Anyway....good to see the old putter putting - enjoy yourself and please keep us posted once in a while with the cabin.

Nice! I made my first trip to WI earlier this month for Airventure, I was blown away at how pretty the state was. Also probably the friendliest people that I've ever encountered. I spent a morning fishing Green Lake and it was fantastic.

My family used to own a fishery just east of Lac La Belle. I miss that area and need to make a trip up there soon.

Let me know when it is completed. I would love to rent it for a week and spend the time fishing with the kids.

Probably a 6 -8 months out. waiting on money for the well (5-10K:rolleyes:) everything else should be done this fall though.

Some of the details

2x6 construction
smart siding or hardy plank for the siding
wanted to use metal roof but too expensive so back to shingles for now.
screened in porch overlooking the lake.
Forced air heat(no wood burner)

Do you board it up in the winter? Does the lake freeze over? I am a California guy and never been to Wisconsin. Looks beautiful.

No boarding up required it is a 4 season type of construction though I may opt to close it down for the winter unless I get renters over the winter.

The lake freezes over but not freeze out so some of the best walleye and crappie fishing you will see around .

Its kind of interesting in Gillett you can use an ATV or a Snowmobile on the streets just like cars. Gillett is suppose to be the "ATV capital of the world" because of all the trails local.

What type of water lines are you going to use? I went with a PEX manifold system when I was doing work on our cabin. While it doesn't get as cold down here in Missouri as it does up there, it can get cold enough to freeze the pipes. I put the manifold down in the basement with a drain to the lake. I turn off the well pump, open the faucets and the manifold drain and the lines are empty in just a few minutes.

That's way up on the peninsula. Now that's up north!

Pex is awesome. Since we switched to it, no issues. +1
