A new spoon for the wife, any suggestions?
She has wanted a Glock for a long time. I am of the opinion that there are better 9 mm choices. A .45 would probably be too much for her, at 110# it might just knock her over, though I have lobbied hard for a nice 1911, but she is not interested.
Figure I better make a move sooner rather than later, as I suspect the overlords here are fixin' to make it a lot tougher to purchase a spoon with a magazine you can remove. So what do you wild eyed spoon freaks say?

Why a B^HGlock? Has she shot one? They work great for some people, not so much for others. I fall in the latter category.
Also, .45 is not the T-rex killer people make it out to be. Yes, it's a big fat heavy bullet, but it's also very slow. Recoil is quite tolerable--I taught my wife's cousins (two 100# Japanese women) to shoot a .45. Of course I built them up to it from a .22, to a .32, then a 9mm, then the .45...but I guarantee your wife could handle it with just a little practice. Take her to the range, rent a few different brands/models, and then let her choose.

Not much difference in recoil, between 9mm and 45cal, the pistol design and weight make more difference. Bigger, heavier pistols kick less, all else equal.
Single stack magazine may be better if she has smaller hands. Similarly, she needs to be able to reach and operate controls - safety, decocker, slide release, lower hammer, etc - without difficulty. Glock has simplest operation; others are simple too; 1911 may be the most complex. Pertinent if she's not going to practice with it regularly. She may lack the hand strength to easily cycle the slide. It needs to be almost effortless for her, even with wet hands or other imperfect conditions. Using weird grips, or pointing gun in odd directions, or bracing the gun on stuff, as she struggles to pull the slide, is dangerous. In that case, you might consider a revolver instead. Six rounds of 357 Magnum should really suffice. Presumably she doesn't have delusions about getting in long firefights and combat reloading and other ridiculous mall-ninja fantasies. If this is for concealed carry, then I am a fan of snubnose revolvers. .38 SPL doesn't kick too much. |

Most important aspect is shot placement. It doesn't matter how big the bullet is if you cannot hit anything.
For me the fit in my hand is key to being able to hit what I am shooting at. Find something that is comfortable for her. Number of rounds held is a secondary consideration, unless you live in a location which restricts. You do not want to run out before the threat is nutralized. |

My son at 7 could shoot my 1911 safely (with supervision of course) with no issue. My 100lb just turned 13 daughter can shoot it just fine too...
That said, I'd look at the Bersa 380. Little weaker than a 9mm, but "safer" with the long DA pull on first shot, reliable, inexpensive.

My Daughter wants a pistol for graduation, so we've been looking around.
She is slender, 5'6" or so and has shot pistols since she was 8. She shoots my Hi-Power well but doesn't like the semi-auto initial loading at all. We borrowed a lot of friends revolvers in all calibers and shot a lot at the farm. She also shot my Vaquero in .45 Colt. She shot them all well. The one she liked the best was the Ruger LCR in .22WMR. We had a discussion about knock down capability, etc...all the standard arguments. For some reason I know a lot of ex Navy Seals so I asked a few of them what they thought. The response was uniform: If she likes to shoot the gun she will get good with it, the most important factors of all are familiarity and comfort which are essential in stressful situations. A guy I deal with everyday, an ex-enlisted Seal who was a team shooter, taught shooting, fought in a lot of places, said this: "Nobody wants to get shot. In a home self defense situation most bad guys will either scoot when her gun comes out or she shoots them...a well placed WMR round or two is enough in 99% of problems." "And she has four more." He also said the home defense pistol of choice for the average joe is a revolver. I have no opinion in this matter since I am not an expert...offered FYI only.

That is the only advice you need.
I detest Beth's gun, I would just as soon use it to level up a wobbly picnic table than to shoot that damn thing but she likes it, she is comfortable with it, she is deadly with it, and that is why I bought it............................for her

I don't like Glocks. I don't like trigger safeties, and I don't like polymer. If I carried every day, the weight might be more of an issue.
How about a Beretta 92fs?

"She has wanted a Glock for a long time."
Let's not overthink this. How about you buy her the Glock she picks out? Jim

How will she be using the spoon? Is she looking for a range gun or a carry gun? My wife carries a little 380 that sucks at the range but rocks as a carry gun.

cheap dead nuts reliable, indestructible, really accurate simple come in many calibers can take lots of accessories No, it's nothing fancy and the trigger pull sucks compared to my SIGs or 1911s. But it gets the job done, I have about $400 into mine and, if I ever lose it, it will be very east to replace. BTW, a poly frame gun will usually kick a little more than steel frames. Practice and trying out many guns is the key to success here. I wouldn't bet my life on a .380. They kick a lot more than people expect because so many of those guns are designed around the caliber. So they're small and plastic, which makes them jump and kick when put to use.

really? i am not a gun expert. especially not handguns. i have both calibers. my 45 is less accurate in my hands because of the recoil. my BIL cant even shoot it.
i think both weight the same. not sure. 9 is a sig, 45 is the glock. i shoot both fairly well, just the sig a tad better.

Edit: Full size Glock maybe weighs less than full size SIG - can't find info to verify.
