Glass shower door guy wants to drill into new tub... sound right?

I'm updating my bathroom and went through a heck of a time carrying a new cast iron tub upstairs.

Anyway, the glass door installer would like to drill into the new tub to install the stationery panel, and I don't like the sounds of that. He says he does it all the time...

The old tub lasted 40 years. I don't know if I or the next guy will have the glass door setup for that long, and now we'll have holes in the tub if we go another route. Is anyone familiar with a modern epoxy that could do the job, but theoretically be removed at some later date if we wanted to?

silicon a channel onto the tub to house the glass. YOu can drill, but we normally don't have our glass guy install that way. No holes means no leaks, ever. No epoxy needed.

Simple, you don't want the hole in your tub.

When I say no holes, you're not drilling any, period.

Find another solution, glass guy...

He wants what's easiest and cheapest for him, you want what's best for you. The two don't always conincide (in fact they usually don't).

I'd tell him "no holes, find another method of attachment". Hint: possibly ceiling-hung with silicone/adhesive at the junction to the tub rail.

Good luck.

If he can't deal with that, find another installer!

No, he's talking about the track or frame that attaches to the tub along the bottom.

As has been stated, he doesn't need to drill. If you decide you want a shower curtain later, you are screwed.

I just pulled out our glass shower doors and installed a shower curtain.

Channel on tub was siliconed down with NO screws, screws into tile walls on either side held everything together fine for ten years.

Station panel means frame less shower door and a fixed panel?

silicon is your friend. the only reason he wants to screw is that the screw will hold the channel in place while the silicon dries. A god installer will be done in three hours including clean up.

Never seen a cast iron tub drilled or screwed. When holes need to be cut in cast iron sinks, it's a diamond bit thing until you see the metal, then the hole saw. A lot can go wrong with the porcelain in either case.

Thanks for posting up some experiences.
JW, Sikaflex 292 looks like the cat's meow. Anything you aren't an expert at?

NOTE with silicones used for joining framing,
tile cleaners and or shower cleaners can cause it to come unstuck,
I would consider other adhesives besides silicone
