My wife, the doctor

All,
Several year's ago, we began on a seemingly impossible journey... today, we reached a milestone!!! My wife has always wanted to be a physician and that became a reality today as she graduated from University of Alabama (Birmingham) School of Medicine. A special thanks to Livi and Moses as I always (and silently) followed your posts regarding medical 'stuff'. I am so incredibly proud of what my wife has accomplished! May 20, 2012 was a great day. Now, the next leg of the journey begins with residency.

Residency selection was an interesting adventure. My wife applied to 14 programs and recieved 'invites' to 13 of those. We eventually decided to actually visit and interview at 10 of her desired residency programs. Starting last September, we traveled quite a bit (I accompanied her on every one since this greatly effects me too!) looking at the programs: she is very much a people person and has always dreamed of being a small town family doctor. In the end, it came down to two programs - Marquette, MI and Huntsville, AL - big differance, huh?. We had already purchased a home in Huntsville two years ago while she was doing her clinical rotations yet Marquette was absolutely beautiful with a challenging Family Medicine program. Since we already knew intimately about the Huntsville program, my wife was able to arrange do to a clinical rotation at Marquette which would serve as a 'second look' at their program. This rotation lasted two weeks in February of this year and I came for the second week since I needed to see if I could deal with the cold (being a Southern boy). After much soul searching and discussions took place and we opted for Huntsville.

I have been staying in Jacksonville, AL throughout the week for work and only travel to Huntsville on the weekends (i.e., I see very little of my wife...). We just listed our Jacksonville home for sale and AMAZINGLY it sold in just six days!!! Closing is scheduled for June 30 so my wife and I will then be living in the same home again. Our situation is special since I will undoubtedly be seeing more of her during residency than I did during her medical shool.

Funny story (at least to me). Last year, she had volunteered to assist with high school physical exams for those trying out for football at a small community outside of Huntsville. We had gone out to an early lunch as she was scheduled to arrive in the early afternoon to begin these exams. Realizing that she may be a bit rusty on 'this' procedure, as soon as we arrived home and just before she drove to the high school she asked if I would assist her... She DID ask me to drop the clothes, turn my head, and cough. I took great pride in my ability to assist with this!

My wife received her BA at age 63. I'm real proud of anyone getting any degree beyond the typical young age. I say that, yet your wife looks to be the 27 YO that enters residency on a typical program.
