Are Cabriolets old man cars?

So I have a friend's 86 Cab that I'm fixing up and selling for him, brand new purchase, wife changed her mind. Looking at it today I was wondering what it'd be like to drive a cab around town and I immediately thought I'd be an old man whereas in the 73, I'm more of a young punk kid.

Are Cabs old man cars these days?

I think it's just a mater ot taste. Most of the car guys I know and work with don't like cabs. They are for pure performance. I on the other hand would love to own a cab (my 914 is close enough). While I like to let it hang out at times, most of the time I just enjoy cruising and checking out the scenery.

Shaun, I don't think you're a punk kid in the '73. I think that's either the image you wish you had or... it's what you think others perceive.

As far as if you drove the cab, I think you are delving into some sort of stereotype.

I think at best, you're an old punk no matter which car you drive.

Why are you so concerned about what others think of you? Sounds like you have a deep-seated personal image issue or something.

Or maybe this was just supposed to be a fun thread and you "don't wanna talk about it."

Heh heh. Yeah, go with that.

Because of the added weight, and reduction in structural integrity, cabs strike me as a corruption of what an old air cooled car is all about.

Oh, not this again...

Why do people "hate" convertibles?

But there is so much more to a sports car than saving a few pounds and absolute racing style rigidity. Porsches are built primarily for fun use on roads. They are designed to be a perfect as possible "roadster". What can be more fun than enjoying a road trip in a sports car on a nice day with the wind blowing trough your hair. Motorcycle riders know about that.

That's a Speedster. Those are for the young and fast. Cabs are for the old and slow.

I wear a helmet when I ride. I feel more comfortable in a car with the windows down and a roof over my head so I don't get sunburned or have to apply uncomfortable sunscreen.

"But in the end we decided that a list of “luxury sports cars” should contain only open-top vehicles to remain true to the classic definition of the sports car."
LAtimes from Kelley Blue Book.

Not many things in the motoring world can beat the smell & the sound of a classic 911 cab on a twisty country road on a sunny day. Crank up some tunes & drive.

(But my hair is getting pretty grey)

If you need that kind of speed get a speedster. Also a convertible. Cant' SC's keep up with Jimmy's Speedster? I had my SC Targa up at 128MPH and it felt very comfortable, even better than at 80MPH.

most people who make comments about cabriolets have never driven one. I think - after owning a cabriolet for about four years - that every true porsche enthusiast should make it a point to drive a cabriolet one time in their life. Hopefully on a cool evening with the sun going down and the sound of a flat six behind you. Absolutely one of life's sensory pleasures.

Then I'm looking forward to driving it! If I didn't have an M491 in the near future, this would be a good car for me.

What you guys need to do is organize a Southeastern Pelican Meet.
There hasn't been one since around 2005 or 2006, iirc.

I wouldn't mind one now, as I've gotten the need for speed out of my system, from 10 years of driving a 930.
