new Garage/machine shop begin
Trees coming down even started buying the machines.....anyway building a 24 x 32. One hole to store a car, the other for the shop. The shop will have vaulted ceiling for a lift.
trees coming down for driveway ![]() latest pick up from a school auction, Rockwell 15-665. Tight as "insert cliche". You get the best tools from school auctions. ![]() |

Are you going to drop 3 phase to the new building? Most decent machine tools will require 3 phase or a phase converter.
In other words, stay away from the Chinese crap you can find at Harbor Fright or Grizzly. If you keep scouring those school actions, you should be able to pick up a decent Bridgeport mill and South Bend lathe for a good price. Might even be able to get them fully tooled, too. (You will spend as much on tooling as you do on the machines before you are done.) That Rockwell was a good find; nice! Keep us posted on the progress. |

I run my 3 phase Bridgeport 1.5hp mill using a cheap 3hp Phoenix phase converter that cost just under $100.

Can't run 3 ph, I'll just run any 3ph off a static converter, like Tim does. You loss some power, but nothing to hamper any ops I'm going to be doing. I'm looking for a well use Bridgeport type mill and a Monarch lathe, I would take a well use South Bend or Clausing. I have run into many deals over the years but never had the space. Lucky I have control of a pretty good machine shop at work.
![]() Geneman Many schools are dumping shop classes, normally the equipment goes to auction, check the bigger auction houses periodically. The equipment can have some rough use , but its generally never worn out like equipment out of a job shop. |

Nice! What do you plan to use the shop for?
We've unloaded a number of machines over the years....typically to anyone who will take them out of our building! My cousin builds bicycle frames.....we gave him a Clausing for some of his fabrication work. My father's Ferrari mechanic has a couple of our old Bridgeports as well.

For 3ph I suggest you take a look at a variable frequency drive.
I run both my milling machine and my lathe using these. You get full 3phase power, infinite speed adjustment, soft starting, cw and ccw rotation and much more. |

Well the zoning crap ended and I lost so I can only build a 24x30 ft building. Anyway the design is done and the foundation will be poured soon. I designed it around a 12 ft overhead two post, probably a Revolution or Dannmar. Started looking at the Rotary "Smart lift" in-ground, but 7-8 grand is too much. Also lose lifting, and storage functions of an above ground.....But man it sure makes for a clean set up. Will submit pics on progress.

D School drill presses around here are nice HD unit,s like the rockwell but usually the table is almost cut in half by novice deep drilling into it.

Nice. The two overhead door is smart. In my old shop and my current shop, there are two doors and it's great for cross breeze in the summer...no AC needed. Good luck with the rest of the construction.
One tip....run water top the shop if you can. |

I hope the sill plate is bolted and wolmanized(copper azole instead of arsenic nowadays).
It should rest on top a vapor barrier. Concrete soaks up water, and transfers it to wood. I would dig/trench down and leave 6" coated concrete foundation exposed for termites as well. Also, when the piles of melting snow soak into the sill, there will be rotting problems. Spend the money and seal that connection now! Use rubber roof shield, plus thick upwards sprayed sealant which overlaps the foundation! You'll thank me later. Last edited by john70t; 09-09-2013 at 09:19 AM.. |
