It is real, I fly with a Neurologist on the weekends and this was a topic on one of his cross countries flights last year.

I carry two phones, and it's gotten worse for me since I started that. I'm always checking phones because I think I got a message...

I can guarantee that it is not caused by some sort of subconscious or involuntary feeling of your phone vibrating.

I have gotten it, and I don't carry a phone, and basically never have. So, it's not caused by your phone, or your brain thinking it's you're phone.

I have the opposite symptom; I often don't hear my phone ringing/notice the vibration, if I'm concentrating...
