Burger King's Satisfries...

The fast food chain is launching a new crinkle-cut french fry that it says has about 20 percent fewer calories than its regular french fries. (Burger King)

I hope to never try them. Seriously, the older (pickier?) I get the less I can stomach fast food. Chipotle or the local deli (not Subway crap) are about as fast food as I get. I prefer eating at home vs paying money to get fat and indigestion.

Less surface area = less contact with oil = less calories.

Yay, marketing!!

Fast food makes me feel awful. Wait, I take that back. It feels AWESOME for the first 30-45 seconds. Not worth it.

Isn't Chipotle a subsidiary of McDonalds?

I count 15 fries.....of course it's fewer calories.

The crinkles give more surface area but less potato.

Ummmmm. I know I'm not the math whiz here... But crinkle cut will have more contact with oil... So that isn't how they are getting the calories down....

My dietician showed me where Chipotle puts a ton of salt in there food...I don't eat there as often as I used...for that reason.
.
I like Subway, actually...again, not much lately due to the bread (diabetic).

Nah, from the pic I think these fries are big, like . . . Ore-Ida size. So a buncha smaller fries would have more surface area and soak up more oil. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

You're right in your assertion that you aren't the whiz, though!

If they're the same size around then sure, that's not what's making the difference. But that pic has 15 fries in it, so i'm guessing they're just big, unless it's a teeny, teeny, tiny, teeny little fry box!

They altered the batter to render less calories/oil retention...they don't say how they "altered", however.

Have you ordered a small order of fries lately? It's a pretty pissy little package!!!

Of course you want to change the rules!!! I was assuming we were discussing a fry of generally the same physical size... The crinkles would add surface area!

And I maintain that fewer bigger fries with crinkles would still have the greater surface area.

No, they wouldn't. And they wouldn't create a doppler effect either.

Usually when they reduce the fat they increase the sodium.
Fat gives food favor and texture.
Maybe they have come up with some other food magic. (slow poison)

Lowfat fries are like non alcoholic beer and decaffeinated coffee. If I'm gonna splurge, I wanna get wired, hammered or fat.

-Whip in more air for less potato needed (cheese puff),
-Add non-caloric fillers,
-Add a hardening agent to maintain fry stiffness.

Processed foods are more chemistry than culinary.
