Tell me about Albuquerque, New Mexico

I have a job interview with a company in Albuquerque, NM. It is probably premature, but I am curious about the quality of life, weather, entertainement, housing, people, etc...in case I got the job and decided to move there. I would be moving from New Jersey. Let me hear from New Mexico Pellicanites!

I'm there often for family and rentals. Don't like it one bit. Too many cops, too much brown and too much sand. Food sucks, too.

Had a gf who was in medical school down there, so I spent some time in the area. Horrible, nasty place. No desire whatsoever to return.

But it looks like your cost of living goes down by a lot judging on real estate market. I would probably take the opportunity to check the area closely during the interview. This way the ball is in your hands come decision time.

I grew up there and like it a lot. Went to college there. I like the desert, arid landscapes. No rain, Not much snow. It's a mile above sea level, like Denver. Ski area literally 30 minutes away at 10K feet above sea level. Santa Fe is an hour away, Taos two hours. Some people from the east coast hate it tho. Friend from New York said "damn, even your mountains are dirt". Not really true, but they're not dense hardwood forested like the East. Others REALLY love it. You can drive your P-car 350 days/year! They have a great PCA group, friendly, lots of drives, etc. Not all snooty racing crowd. You can ski and play golf in the same day. Cost of living will seem like a bargain. There are a couple weeks in March every year when the wind (and sand) blows like crazy. No fun. You should go look for yourself. Spend a couple days there. There is INCREDIBLE scenery, unpopulated wilderness, and adobe towns and pueblos just a few hours away. Kudos for spelling it correctly. That said, I do not like Rio Rancho. Rio Rancho is an ABQ suburb on the West Mesa... but it's now larger than ABQ. It's a typical southwest suburb... ticky-tacky like in Socal, Phoenix and Vegas Last edited by tcar; 01-21-2011 at 01:58 PM.. |

I've been a few times, there is a movie studio there. I liked it,but then again I was there in the Spring and it was quite pleasant. Plenty of upscale stores, you can get housing that is quite nice for relatively inexpensive.

It all depends upon what you're looking for. I hate MI, but many people love it here. I'd go to New Mexico (or anywhere warm) in a heartbeat!

I was born there a long time ago. My family loved it. My mother always said that of all the places we lived and moved to and from when I was young, the only place she cried when we left was Alburquerque.

A few years ago I spent a week there for a conference. I rented a car and drove all around and spent time with a good friend who lives between there and Santa Fe. I loved it and he really liked living there too. It's beautiful, less expensive than Santa Fe. There are two completely different climates, one in the mountains and one on the desert floor, but they're only a few minute drive away from each other. I'd live there.

After reading 17 posts, I thought I'd add my 0.02 on the topic of Albuquerque, NM. I lived there from 1985 thru 1999 and just simply LOVED IT. I still maintain a residence in Rio Rancho, which is West of Albuquerque on the Mesa. My son graduated from Univ. of NM and my daughter is planning on attending school there in 2012.

My wife and I owned and operated a Jamaican Restaurant in the city of Albuquerque for 5 years. It is a great place of natural beauty and history, with hot springs in the mountains, it's 5,000' above sea level with the Sandia Mtn. Range extending to over 11,000' above sea level. Skiing in winter, abundance of hunting (Elk, Deer, Barbary Sheep, Antelope, and Bear) and fishing all year round. It's a desert climate with no extremes either in summer or winter. Housing is very affordable, with allot of land available to live on. Other cities close by to reside in are; Corrales, Rio Rancho, Sandia Mtns. and Bernallilo. Abundance of Native American reservations in and around the area, which add to the uniqueness of the area. Santa Fe is only 50 miles north. The Rio Grande River runs central through the city and offers good recreation. Contact the Chamber of Commerce and request information, as this forum might be mis-leading. My wife and I are moving back there NLT 2012 (maybe even this year) as she is embarking on a new career as a Psychologist and the pay structure is excellent, especially with the cost of living being so low. Welcome to the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce They have an active Porsche Club as well; Roadrunner Region PCA Go for it, it's a great place to live. Very family oriented.
