why do I hate Overhaulin?

Is it because every car looks the same when completed? Chip Foose has one look and applies it to every car that lands in his shop. A once proud classic muscle car is pimped out with 20" custom rims (that look like they've been dipped in chrome) The engine is ripped out and replaced with a SBC crate motor, custom paint, did I say custom paint? I think 90% of the focus is on the paint, and a stereo system so overkill that even low-riders would be in awe. It just seems that no matter who owns the car, the build is the exactly same. Imagine what they would do if they got their hands on your nice P-car. Now.... Gas Monkey Garage gets it. They have a different style and usually retain many of the stock features. I actually dont think I've ever witnessed a stereo install on the entire season. Cool shop.

that's what the sponsors give them to install- SBC's_ PS google some of the dirt on that show, they messed up a car or two.

My best friend has appeared in a few episodes...

Agreed. Without a doubt, my fave of all the car programs.

Dump the TV - Overhaulin' in your garage.

TV is about watching other people do things you enjoy ...

I used to watch it but it's so predictable now, I don't bother.

They need to freshen it up or stop the series.

+1 for Gas Monkey...

BK911 10-01-2013 03:48 AM

Agree with Gas Monkey. Really like their style.
Love Sue. "Gas Monkey? You stink. More like a$$ monkey." :D

Make that another +1 for Gas Monkey... my wife even watches it.

I have to disagree regarding the 'one look for every car' statement.
Here's his take on an air-cooled classic. He's shows a lot of restraint on this project.
Bill K
(still gives me the creeps though, with the thought of the driver's legs being in front of the front wheels)

Another Gas Monkey fan.

The overhauling formula is the same I agree. I would be very upset if my El Camino fell into their hands. No one can paint a car in a week and have quality work. It may look good on TV the first few days, but in a year that paint job is gonna blow chunks. My Elky does not need paint, but after 320,000 miles it could use an entire interior and dash.

I like the Fantomworks show. He takes months to restore a car. True craftsmanship. I would LOVE to have my Elky go through that shop. Their prices reflect their quality.

Nothing lamer than ultra low profile tires on a vintage auto of any sort. Shows a complete lack of appreciation for the vehicle in question.

Even if you don' t appreciate the looks of the cars on overhaulin I would be damn happy to have one of them. They did a 60s Cadillac a few years back that was beautiful. The finished product is pretty much new from front to back and loaded with upgraded performance parts. I can't even begin to imagine the parts bill for one of these cars not to mention the paint and body work labor charges.

I do like Ass Monkey though.

I believe every gear head knows a Richard Rawlings.....many without his ability to laugh at himself. Let's hope he doesn't change....he's just slick enough as is.

Foose (verb): to foul up a car with heavy-handed rote "customization"; to execute so many mundane modifications to a vehicle as to make it an undesirable caricature of itself. "What car is he going to Foose this week?"

The style may be a little over the top but I would be pretty happy to have any of these in my garage.

Agreed.

Some cars you can put just about any rim on, other cars only look correct with a select few while a few cars never look correct with anything but the original stock wheels.

I'm another Gas monkey fan. I like the fact that they leave some of their cars paint basically the way they found it and just add clear coat.

Laneco 10-01-2013 07:33 AM

I like Gas Monkey mostly because some of the guys are pretty darn fun-loving. But I am definitely an Overhaulin' fan. The prevalence of SBC engines is due to the high percentage of SBC cars. A lot of the small block cars wind up with a big block. If it is a Ford it generally stays Ford, usually courtesy of Roush, same with Mopar remaining Mopar.

What Foose has done is inspired a lot of people to create someone unique for a loved one as a surprise. So let me offer another definition:

To Foose (verb): To use your hands and your heart to give someone you love something they have always dreamed about.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that the overhaulin crew can do some amazing work, but that's not my issue. They just use the same prescription for every project, and the cars more often then not are so over the top that they end up being something that you probably wouldn't even want to drive anymore. The gentleman above sitting on the hood of the Black car probably never invisioned 20" subs and headrest monitors that are no doubt a permanent custom fixture of his new overhaulin interior. :p Besides, Richard Rollins is way cooler then Chip.
