Senna

I just got back from the film tonight. It is a wonderful documentary about the man, not just the racing driver. His caring, honest nature really touched me. He always thanked God for his talent and felt that driving just came subconsciously for him. That was what he did- driving to win, and he loved it.

So, who else went to see it?

Senna Times, Movie Tickets, and Theaters - Zap2it

Laemmle Town Center 5 Movie Times and Tickets - Zap2it

There is this theater on the West Coast and one in New York. The movie closes Tuesday apparently. Not sure where it goes next. Might not make it to you until DVD, which could be a year away if ever.

It came out in Brazil last summer I believe, and it has been to the UK and Japan. The motorsports subculture that appreciates Senna is not as large in proportion to the US population or to the NASCAR crowd, so they may not be spending too much time in the US.

Saw it today in Encino. I thought it was very well done. A good combination of racing action and info on Senna the person. I suspect it will be available on DVD in just a few months. I cant imagine a movie like this filling many seats in the USA.

For those of you who do such things, this movie is now available for download on torrent sites. The film includes some Portuguese and French dialog, so be sure to download one with English subtitles.

-1.

Why?

Its a labor of love film on a topic that means alot to many here, made by first rate documentary film makers currently trying their best to get a US distribution deal so we can all see it on the proper big theatre screen it warrants. They deserve to make a buck on their efforts, either in theatres or on the eventual DVD release.

Don't treat it like its Pirates of the Caribbean XII.

I will definately be buying the DVD. I might consider downloading Top Gear but it is just easier to wait for BBC America to air it.

Why? Because I am an impulse shopper.
I haven't watched it yet, but if I like it I will purchase it. I don't have a problem buying quality work.
I watched 100 Porsches and Me and appreciated the passion so I bought the DVD.

If I had bought or paid to watch that stupid Avatar movie, it would have made me sick.

The director of the movie just announced via Twitter that they have reached a US distribution deal. They are expecting a July release.

Woo Hoo!

Off the chart Epicness!

I watched the film's director, Bruno Senna and Senna's long time chief mechanic (an English chap, can't remember his name) on Peter Windsor's new media outlet/website (not on my laptop so I can't post the link) a couple of months ago, and the director was the real deal honest to goodness fan of Senna, not just a guy with a great idea for a film looking to make a few bucks.
You could tell very quickly their honest appreciation for all that Senna did, who he was, what he meant to the world of motor sport etc etc etc and how important it was to capture that on film in such a way to reflect all that Senna was, not just the epic driver... I believe Senna's family saw this genuine admiration and respect for Senna, and that they had the talent and experience required to do it right didn't hurt either.
Their honest love for the guy obviously played a part in the family embracing their "little documentary film project"

It also helped that they got lucky very early on when they attended a couple of events where the Senna family 'just happen to be' and were introduced and made their 'pitch'.

Obviously the director and his team were able to capture the Senna family's trust and understanding of what their vision was for the film from the get go which was pivotal in getting the film organized and off the ground. It didn't happen over night, these guys were working on this for quite some time. Bruno said during PW's show the family knew immediately these were the guys to do the film.

Additionally they also received the blessing of BE, and a plethora of F1 owners, team directors etc who opened up their vaults of archival pictures-video-interviews etc providing access to never before seen/heard material. This provided the film-makers insights into the world of Senna, not just the legendary driver, but who he really was on and off the track.

I suspect there is another films worth of golden gems that didn't make it into the film. Actually, admittedly they couldn't get all of the material into the film. I hope some of this material makes it onto the special features of the DVD!

Thanks for posting the links guys!!

I saw that as well. It was on Peter Windsor's excellent new weekly webcast,The Flying Lap, which debuted in January and is also available as a free audio podcast on iTunes. New hour long episodes every Wednesday, and they've been outstanding so far.

The Senna episode from January did not feature a mechanic, but rather driving coach Rob Wilson. Also featured was writer/producer Manish Pandey, not director Asif Kapadia.

See the episode here:

I can't wait to see Senna on the legitimate big screen it deserves.
